WILKES-BARRE – Top-seeded DeSales University won its opening round contest at the 2001 Freedom Conference Softball Championships with a 7-1 victory over fourth-seeded Manhattanville College.

DeSales improved to 22-11 while Manhattanville slipped to 12-17.
DeSales struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Kate Steiner led off with a triple to right. Kristin Schultz then followed with a RBI single to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Jen Lococo then doubled, moving Schultz to third. Christine Petrilla then added a RBI double to right for a 2-0 advantage.

In the second Manhattanville used a solo home run over the left field fence by Samantha Howe to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Bulldogs looked to counter in the bottom of the frame when Brianna Chilcoat walked and Steiner reached base on a Manhattanville error. Schultz then drove in Chilcoat with an infield out, moving Steiner to third. Lococo followed with an RBI single to plate Steiner for a 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third, DeSales took advantage of a one-out error as Shelly McCarthy advanced all the way to third on a missed line drive to left. After Chilcoat walked and advanced to second, Steiner grounded to second baseman Erin Sidjak who gunned down McCarthy at home. After Steiner advanced to second, Schultz followed with a two-run single to give DeSales a 6-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth for DeSales, Steiner would single and scored on a double by Lococo to push the score to 7-1.
Lococo led DeSales by going 3-for-4 with two RBI while Schultz was 2-for-4 with four RBI. Steiner was 2-for-4 with four runs scored. Lococo was the winning pitcher, allowing one run on four hits while striking out three batters.

Zekus led Manhattanville with a 2-for-4 showing. Howe was the losing pitcher, allowing seven runs, four earned, on 10 hits with four strikeouts.
DeSales will face the winner of the 1:00 p.m. first-round pairing between second-seeded FDU-Florham and third-seed host King's at 3:00 p.m.
