DESALES ADVANCES PAST KING'S IN SHOOTOUT IN MAC FREEDOM SEMI-FINALS
WILKES-BARRE -- Alex DiRienzo made good on the seventh round of penalty kicks as the DeSales University men's soccer team advanced to the MAC Freedom Tournament title game, outscoring host King's College 4-3 in penalty kicks.
The game is officially a 0-0 tie after neither team scored in 90 minutes of regulation play, plus two 10-minute overtime periods.
King's ends its season with a 11-6-2 record while DeSales stands at 12-2-5. DeSales advances to Saturday's title game against top-seeded eastern University, a 4-0 winner over FDU-Florham in the other league semi-final.
After both teams missed their opening penalty kicks,
August Axtman scored for King's but DeSales Alex Manzo countered to even the score at 1-1. Both teams missed their third-round attempts but in the fourth round
Brendan Raab scored for King's and Monarch goalie
Owen Geedey appeared to make a critical save. But the Monarch goal was called for leaving his mark early and DeSales Michael Kirby was awarded a re-kick and converted to forge a 2-2 tie.Â
After each team missed their fifth-round King's
Kevin Mazol converted for the Monarchs to go ahead 3-2.  Geedey then stopped Joey Malvestuto's attempt as the Monarchs rushed the field to celebrate. But the Monarch junior was again whistled for leaving early and DeSales was given another attempt. Malvesto made good on his re-kick to send the teams into a seventh round of penalty kicks. Â
The Monarchs missed on their next attempt but DeRienzo made good on his shot for the Bulldogs come out on top.
In regulation and overtime, King's outshot DeSales 16-8 and held a 9-7 advantage in corner kicks. Geedey made three saves for King's to register his seventh shutout of the year and extend his King's career mark to 22 shutouts in three seasons.
