KING'S MEN'S BASKETBALL OPENS SEASON WITH 74-65 WIN OVER NY CITY TECH
WILKES-BARRE – The new-look King's College men's basketball team opened the 2008-09 season with a 74-65 victory over New York City Tech in the opening round of the Ramada Inn/Monarch Classic Saturday in Scandlon Gymnasium.
The young Monarchs, who graduated nine players from its 2007 and 2008 Freedom Conference championship teams, started two freshmen, one sophomore, and two juniors in the game and never trailed in the contest. King's opened up a 40-27 halftime lead and never let its lead shrink to less than 10 points.

Sophomore center Kevin Conroy led the way with 20 points and nine rebounds while making 12-of-18 shots from the foul line. Freshman forward Chase McGowan posted a double-double in his first collegiate game, scoring 12 points while hauling down 10 rebounds. Fellow rookie Nick Reising came off the bench to add 12 more points on the strength of 4-of-5 shooting from three-point land while contributing four assists. Freshman point-guard Kyle Stackhouse score four points and distributed five assists in his first collegiate start. Wil Acevedo netted nine points while Mike Wagner and Bill Joyce chipped in with six and five points respectively.

The Monarchs held a 47-30 rebounding advantage while making 7-of-27 shots from the charity stripe. King's was also 9-of-21 from three-point range.

City Tech was led by senior guard Jamaal Hall who canned a game-high 37 points on 14-of-25 shooting. Ryan Phillip added 16 points.
King's will face seventh-ranked Widener University in the championship game Sunday at 3:00 p.m. Widener bested Montclair State 60-56 in the other first-round matchup.  The 1:00 p.m. consolation game will feature Montclair State against City Tech.
