LADY MONARCH CAGERS OPEN 2011-12 SEASON WITH 86-66 VICTORY OVER MT. ALOYSIUS

WILKES-BARRE — Senior small forward Samantha Simcox scored 27 points with 13 rebounds and the King's College women's basketball team broke open a close game at the half with a 13-0 run to start the second half as the Lady Monarchs opened the 2011-12 season with an 86-66 victory over visiting Mt. Aloysius College Tuesday night in Scandlon Gymnasium.

The teams went back-and-forth to start the game until King's used a 7-0 spurt to take a 22-16 lead on a three-pointer by Simcox with 11:13 left in the opening stanza. The lead eventually grew to 37-24 on a bucket by Marissa Manning and a three-pointer from Brittany Muscatell with 5:36 on the clock. With Kings maintaining a 44-33 lead at the 1:23 mark after Paige Carlin made one-of-two foul shots for the Lady Monarchs, the Mounties closed out the half with a 6-2 surge to cut the King's lead to 46-39 at the break.

In the second half, King's used a pair of foul shots by Manning, seven points form Simcox, and three-pointers from Celia Rader and Abby Malloy to cap a 13-0 run in a 3: 39 span as King's surged to a 60-39 lead with 16:21 left in the contest. The Lady Monarchs continued to pad the lead, increasing the margin to 26 points when Jessica McHugh made one-of-two charity tosses to give King's a 69-43 advantage with 11:47 remaining.

Mt. Aloysius would come no closer than 18 points when Kaylee Keagy scored on a lay-up with 4:45 left in the contest to cut the score to 76-58. King's, however, countered with a 9-2 spurt to extend the lead to 85-60 with 2:24 to play.

Simcox enjoyed an outstanding all-round game, making 10-of-11 shots from the field while adding four steals and two assists in just 27 minutes of play. Manning, a 6-foot freshman forward from Philadelphia Catholic League power Cardinal O'Hara, scoring 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting while adding six rebounds and two blocked shots. Junior guard Celia Rader overcame a scoreless first half to net 12 points in the second half, canning three three-pointers. Paige Carlin contributed eight points while Katlin Michaels enjoyed an outstanding floor game with seven points, seven rebounds, and a career-high 10 assists while posting three steals and a block.  As a team, King's blocked 10 shots and 11 different players reached the scoring column.

Mt. Aloysius was led by Lindsay Sammarco who scored a team-high 23 points but was held to just three-points after exploding for 20 in the first half. Spring Krepps added 10 points as the only other Mountie player to reach double figures.

King's returns to action Friday and Saturday at the Rutgers-Newark Invitational. The Lady Monarchs face New York Polytechnic Friday at 8:00 p.m
