KING'S WOMEN ADVANCE TO TOURNEY FINAL WITH 70-58 WIN OVER NEW YORK POLYTECHNIC

NEWARK, NJ -- Katlin Michaels and Paige Carlin combined for 41 points to lead the King's College women's basketball team to a 70-58 victory over New York Polytechnic in the opening round of the Rutgers-Newark Tip-Off Classic Friday night at the Golden Dome Arena, Newark, NJ.

With the win, King's advances to Saturday's title game where the Lady Monarchs face host Rutgers-Newark University at 6:00 p.m. RNU defeated 65-49 in the other first-round pairing.

King's trailed throughout much the first half as Polytechnic built its biggest lead at 21-12 with 10:52 remaining in the opening half. But King's remained patient and chipped away, using a 18-5 surge over the next 8:30 to build a 30-26 lead with 2:46 left in the half following a basket by Carlin. After a Polytechnic bucket at the 2:22 mark, King's closed out the half with a driving lay-up by Michaels and five straight points from Carlin to take a 36-30 lead into the half-time break.

King's came out of the locker room and picked up right where the Lady Monarchs left off as a lay-up by Michaels, a three-pointer from Carlin, and a Samantha Simcox bucket down low upped the Lady Monarch advantage to 43-30 with 17:10 to play.

After a Polytechnic basket, the Lady Monarchs countered with four consecutive Simcox points, one-of-two foul shots by Marissa Manning, and a lay-up from Michaels to extend the lead to 50-32 with 14:43 remaining.

Polytechnic whittled the lead down to 54-44 on a bucket by Catherine Thompson but driving lay-ups from Jess McHugh, Brittany Muscatell, and Michaels, along with a three-pointer by Simcox gave King's its biggest lead of the game at 66-44 with 6:52 left in the contest.
