KING'S WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO RUTGERS-NEWARK 49-42 IN TOURNEY CHAMPIONSHIP
NEWARK, NJ -- The King's College women's basketball team struggled mightily from the field, connecting on just 22-percent of its shots from the floor, as the Lady Monarchs dropped a 49-42 verdict to host Rutgers-Newark University in the championship game of the John J. Adams Tip-Off Classic in Newark, NJ.
With the loss, King's slipped to 2-1 on the year while Rutgers-Newark improved to 3-0.
Rutgers-Newark raced out of the gates to an 8-0 lead before King's got on the board with a pair of foul shots from
Paige Carlin. Kendra Johnson then countered with a three-pointer to put the Scarlet Raiders on top by nine-points, at 11-2 with 14:08 left in the opening stanza. The Lady Monarchs chipped away and cut the lead to 11-8 after a jumper by Brittany
Muscatell and two foul shots from
Katlin Michaels at the 11:01 mark
Both teams went cold, scoring a combined five points over the next five minutes of play. The Lady Monarchs drew to within 13-12 after Michaels added two more free throws with 5:55 to go in the first half. But the Scarlet Raptors went on a 10-2 run to build a 23-14 lead with 2:26 on the clock after two foul shots from Lori Nieves. King's battled to within 23-19 on a
Paige Carlin jumper with 0:58 to go but Rutgers-Newark used a traditional three-point play by Jasmine Danille with 0:13 on the clock as the Scarlet Raptors took a 26-19 into the halftime break.
In the second half King's battled to within 31-29 on a three-pointer from
Celia Rader with 13:49 left in the contest but Rutgers-Newark answered with a 6-2 spurt to extend the lead to 37-31 with 10:44 to play. King's responded with a 5-0 run to cut the score to 37-36 at the 9:33 mark, then tied the score at 42-42 on a Sammie
Simcox jumper with 2:53 to play.
But the Scarlet Raptors again answered King's run, using a la-up by
Sahree Gordon at 2:31, then a huge three-pointer from
ShaQuanna Marshall to give Rutgers-Newark a 47-42 lead with 1:11 remaining in the contest.
From there King's was forced to foul and Brittany Smith made one-of-two charity tosses with 0:47 to before King's missed its next two shots. Johnson was then fouled and made a one-for-two free throws with 0:10 to seal the victory.
King's made just 11 field goals the entire game, taking 50 shots in the contest. The Lady Monarchs also struggled from three-point range, making only 3-of-20. King's made 17-of-27 from the foul line.
Celia Rader led King's with 11 points and four rebounds while
Paige Carlin followed with 10 points and two assists. Sammie
Simcox tallied nine points and a team-high 13 rebounds while
Katlin Michaels chipped in with eight points and six boards.
Rutgers-Newark fared slightly better offensively, connecting on 27.1 (16-59) percent from the field and made just 20.0 (3-15) percent from the three-point line. The Scarlet Raiders were 14-20 from the foul line.
Jade Howard led Rutgers-Newark with 13 points and nine rebounds while Kendra Johnson followed with 12 points, two rebounds, and two steals. Jasmine Daniels added 11 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Scarlet Raider cause.
King's returns to action Tuesday night when the Lady Monarchs host the University of Scranton at 7:00 p.m. in Scandlon Gymnasium.
