LADY MONARCH CAGERS DOWN REGIS 60-49, FINISH WHITTIER TOURNEY WITH 1-1 MARK
WHITTIER, CA —
Samantha Simcox scored a game-high 16 points and
Paige Carlin added 13 to power the King's College women's basketball team to a 60-49 victory over Regis College in the final day of the Blue and Gold Poet Classic Friday at Whittier College, Whittier, CA.
With the win, King's improved to 8-3 on the year while Regis slipped to 5-3.
The teams played a back-and-forth first half but King's took a 29-26 lead at the break on the strength of 11 points from Simcox.
In the second stanza the Lady Monarchs held on to a 40-36 lead with 11:39 remaining when King's made its decisive run. Two straight jumpers from
Celia Rader and
Katlin Michaels, followed by a three-pointer by Simcox gave King's a 47-37 lead with 7:58 left in the contest. After Regis cut the lead to 47-40 with 5:28 to play, King's used a driving lay-up from paige Carlin and a pair of free throws by
Lindsay Atchison to push the lead to 51-40 3L24 on the clock.
Regis made one last push and whittled the lead to 53-46 with 1:24 to go by King's put the game away with a Michaels jumper and another Carlin lay-up, upping the lead to 57-46 with 0:44 remaining.
Simcox, who earned a spot on the all-tournament team, was 5-of-9 from the field and canned a pair of three-pointers to pace the King's attack. Carlin netted 11 of her 13 points in the game's final 20 minutes while adding four boards. Rader had six points and five rebounds. Atchison tallied seven points to earn an all-tournament berth. Manning contributed eight points and three boards, while Michaels finished with eight points, eight rebounds, and four assists.
King's made just 33.9 (18-53) percent of its shot from the field but made up the difference by going 21-of-29 from the foul line.
Clare Romonas led Regis with 12 points and three rebounds while Emilee Marro added nine points and seven rebounds. Stefanie Crawford chipped in with eight points for the Pride.
King's will now return to the East Coast where the Lady Monarchs resume play January 7 with a 7:00 p.m. home contest against defending Colonial State Athletic Conference champion Neumann University.
