KING'S FALLS TO GWYNEDD-MERCY 66-42 IN OPENING GAME OF FNCB/MONARCH CLASSIC

WILKES-BARRE — Visiting Gwynedd-Mercy University raced out to an 18-8 start and built a 15-point lead at the half en route to a 66-42 victory over host King's College in the opening round of the FNCB/Monarch Classic Friday night in Scandlon Gym.

With the win Gwynedd improved to 6-3 while King's slipped to 5-3. In the other first-round game Susquehanna outlasted Wilkes 100-91 in overtime.

King's fell behind quickly in the first half as the Monarchs committed 15 turnovers and made just 33.3 (17-52) percent from the field.  Gwynedd, meanwhile, had 12 steals and shot 47.1 (16-34) percent in the opening stanza. The second half went no better for the Monarchs who fell behind by 26 points with 12:21 left in the contest.

Arron Goodman led Gwynedd with 18 points and eight rebounds while Cedric Elleby followed with 17 points, eight rebounds, and three steals.  Justin Knight added 12 points and three assists.

For King's, Tim O'Shea posted a team-high 12 points with four rebounds while Dan Borner added 10 points with two steals.

In the opening game Susquehanna ran off the first eight points in overtime and never looked back as the Crusaders improved to 6-1 while Wilkes slipped to 6-2.

Jason Deitrich led a barrage of six double-figure scorers by netting 24 points.  For Wilkes, Alec Wizer scored a game-high 32 points and made 8-of-11 from three-point range.

King's will face Susquehanna Saturday at 3:00 p.m. While Wilkes squares off with Gwynedd-Mercy at 1:00 p.m.
