KING'S MEN'S SOCCER ADVANCES TO FREEDOM TITLE GAME WITH 2-0 WIN OVER MANHATTANVILLE

WILKES-BARRE -- The visiting Manhattanville College men's soccer team entered Wednesday night's Freedom Conference Tournament semi-final game at King's College riding a five-game shut-out streak, covering the span of 559 minutes. It took the Monarchs just 3:39 to end the Valiants' scoreless stretch.

King's scored one goal in each half and earned the right to defend its conference crown as the Monarchs downed Manhattanville 2-0 at McCarthy Stadium. With the win, King's equaled the school-record for wins in improving to 16-3 1. Manhattanville, meanwhile, slipped to 9-6-4.

King's and Manhattanville played to a 1-1 tie in the regular-season meeting between the teams on October 10. In that game, the Valiants quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a goal in the seventh minute.

This time around, King's looked to start fast and did, taking advantage of a throw from the left sideline by Chris Nygren. The King's senior's throw caromed to the right win when Brendan Raab slid a slick entry pass into the box. From there, Daniel Hernandez redirected the pass into the right corner of the net to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead.

In the second half the score remained the same until Nygren delivered a long through-ball from midfield to Brian Fenster, who quickly cut inside a Valiant defender and beat goalie Willie Silber inside the right post to push the score to 2-0 with 36:39 left in the contest.

The Monarchs defense did its job the rest of the way, keeping the Valiants off the board.

Manhattanville held a slim 10-9 advantage in shots but few were quality attempts as Monarch goalie Owen Geedey was forced to make just four saves in the game. Both teams attempted four corner kicks in the contest.

King's will look to win a third straight Freedom Conference title on Saturday when the Monarchs host third-seeded eastern University at 7:00 p.m. at McCarthy Stadium. The winner will receive an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III national tournament. It will also mark the second year the two teams will meet for the conference championship with the Monarchs wining 2-1 in double-overtime.
