Monarch Wrestlers Go 1-1 on Opening Day of Bud Whitehill D-III Duals

KING'S WRESTLERS SPLIT FIRST TWO MATCHES AT BUD WHITEHILL DUALS

WILLIAMSPORT – The King's College wrestling split its first two matches at the Bud Whitehill Division III Duals at Lycoming College, falling to 15th ranked Cortland State by a 24-6 count Friday afternoon before rebounding with a 27-15 over Baldwin-Wallace.

The Monarchs fell behind early, dropping three close matches to start. At 125, Mike Tabasco fell 3-0 to Jared Lemke before Tony Miele dropped a hard fought 3-2 verdict to Aljamain Sterling, ranked third nationally in Division III. Frankie Davis then came up short in a 4-1 decision to Mark Arcaca before Chris Sterling lost a 7-3 matchup against Troy Sterling.

King's broke through at 157 when Taylor Green tallied a 11-5 decision over Cory Mahony. Cortland answered when Will Brodfueher defeated Jerry Robbins 5-2 before 10th ranked Mike Ciaburri posted a 14-2 win over Dave Foley.  At 184, the Monarchs registered their final win when Frank Marinucci edged William Parks 4-3.  Cortland won the final two matches with a 13-2 major decision over Anthony Cortigliano at 197  as well as 1 15-0 technical fall against John Humble at 285.

Against Baldwin-Wallace, King's trailed 6-0 after the first match but at 133-pounds, Miele knotted the score with a pin of Philip Payne in 2:15. Davis garnered a 10-4 decision over Eric Schubert at 141 for King's, but Noah Blackwell fell 3-1 at 149 as the teams entered 157 deadlocked at 9-9.

Green earned a 6-0 triumph over Korey Leonhard before Robbins was awarded a forfeit at 165 as the Monarchs built a 18-9 lead.  Baldwin-Wallace scored a pin at 174 to cut the lead to 18-15. Marinucci picked up a clutch 1-0 decision against Cody Quick at 184 as the Monarchs extended the advantage to 21-15.  In the 197-pound bout, Peter Dwyer clinched the match with a 10-5 triumph over Trisan Stoll to push the lead to 24-15.  King's Chris Rash wrapped up the match with a 3-1 decision over Ryan Jones to bring the final score to 27-15.

King's will resume wrestling Saturday against Trine University at 9:00 a.m.
