KING'S WRESTLERS GO 3-0 ON SATURDAY TO FINISH 5TH IN BUD WHITEHILL DIVISION III DUALS
WILLIAMSPORT – After going 1-1 on Friday, the King's College won three straight matches on Saturday to finish with a fine fifth-place-finish at the 20-team Bud Whitehill Division III Duals at Lycoming College, Williamsport.
King's (10-8), which entered the tournament unranked with a 6-7 mark, went 4-1 amongst a field that included eight squads ranked nationally in Division III by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.
In its first match on Saturday, the Monarchs posted a 24-16 win over Trine University. In its next match, the Monarchs upset 21st ranked host Lycoming by a 24-13 count. In the fifth-sixth place match, the Monarchs pulled out a 20-19 victory over Ohio Northern.
Against Trine, the Monarchs trailed 16-15 heading into the final two bouts. Freshman Peter Dwyer picked up a clutch pin in 2:00 before Chris Rash sealed the match with a narrow 2-1 decision.
In the matchup against Lycoming, King's jumped out to a 10-0 lead after wins by Mike Tabasco, Tony Miele, and Frankie Davis. Taylor Green added a major decision to push the Monarch advantage to 14-5, but the Warriors posted three straight decision to close to within 15-13. Again, with two matches remaining, Dwyer and Rash again came up huge. Dwyer scored a second straight first period pin and Rash won another harrowing 2-1 decision to put the match away.
In King's final match of the day, the Monarchs rallied to place fifth. After racing out to another 10-0 lead on decisions by Tabasco and Davis, along with a major decision by Miele, Ohio Northern scored a pin at 149 to cut the lead to 10-6 but Green answered for King's with a 6-2 decision at 157 to up the Monarch lead to 13-6. Ohio Northern fought back, however, to win the next three bouts with two technical falls and a decision to capture a 19-13 lead with two bout left.
Once again the Monarch duo of Dwyer and Rash were up to the challenge. Dwyer secured an important 13-1 major decision to cut the lead to 19-17 to set up a dramatic finish at 285. Rash then followed up with match-clinching 5-3 decision to give King's its third victory of the day in dramatic fashion.
Tabasco, Miele, Green, Dwyer, and Rash all went 3-0 on the day while Davis was 2-1 to lead
King's returns to the mat Thursday with a 7:30 p.m. matchup at Muhlenberg College in Allentown.
