MONARCHS WRESTLERS SWEEP TRI-MEET OVER SCRANTON, HUNTER
WILKES-BARRE – The King's College wrestling team came out on the good end of a triangular match Saturday in Scandlon Gymnasium as the Monarchs posted a 37-15 victory over the University of Scranton as well as a 22-17 comeback win over Hunter.
Against Scranton, the Monarchs won seven of 10 matches and registered a season-high five pins and a major decision. Mike LaPorta, James Straight, and Chris Mazzocchi erased an early 3-0 deficit by posting three straight pins to put the Monarchs ahead 18-3. Frank Marinucci added a 4-2 decision at 165 before Mike Reilly posted another fall at 174. Peter Dwyer added a 14-2 major decision at 197 before Anthony Corigliano ended the match with a second period fall.
In the match with Hunter, the Monarchs overcame a 13-0 lead after dropping the first four matches to rally for the victory. After dropping the first four contests, Don Hollenbach got the Monarchs on the board with a 6-2 decision. Marinucci followed with an important 11-3 major decision at 165 before Reilly upped his season record to 26-1 with a second-period pin to tie the match at 13-13. It was his first competition of the season at 174 after wrestling at 184 all year long where he ranked fourth nationally in Division III.
After a Hunter major decision at 184 gave the Hawks a 17-13 lead, Dwyer earned a 5-0 whitewash victory ay 197 to bring King's to within 17-16. King's, however, would benefit from a Hunter forfeit at heavyweight at Kevin Trant had his hand raised as King's walked away with the win.
