Early Goal Difference In Men’s Soccer Loss At Eastern

ST. DAVIDS, PA (October 27, 2018) – The Eastern University men's soccer team scored in the 10th minute to defeat King's College 1-0 in a battle of the top two teams in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom on Saturday afternoon on Olson Field.

The Eagles (15-2-1, 7-0 MAC Freedom) extended their unbeaten streak to 14 matches and earned the top seed and home field advantage in this week's conference tournament with the win. King's (10-5-2, 5-2 MAC Freedom) will be the second seed and host a semifinal match on Tuesday.

Cade Harmon scored the lone goal 9:48 into the match when he bodied a cross by Sam Sutherland into the back of the net. Billy Walenda looked to give the Eagles another goal in the 16th minute but Owen Geedey was able to come up with a save. Fabio Massa put King's first shot attempt on goal before Harmon hit the crossbar in the 21st minute. King's pressed the even the score near the end of the half but Pat Holton's first header went wide and his second header off a Kyle Shalvey corner kick was kept out of the back of the net by Anthony Hitchcock.

In the second half Will Brack and Pat Holton missed wide before Shalvey put a shot on goal that Hitchcock knocked away. The Eagles countered with three shots with Geedey needing to make saves on two of them. King's put more pressure on Hitchcock and the Eastern defense in the final 13 minutes as Zach Wolcott and Ryan Romeo put shots on goal. In the 85th minute Shalvey headed a ball that looked like it would find the back of the net but a EU defender knocked to ball away for a team save. The Monarchs had one last look late in the 89th minute as Fabio Massa's shot was saved by Hitchcock.

King's held a 13-10 shot advantage and took four corner kicks to Eastern's one. Geedey finished the match with four saves while Hitchcock made six.

King's will begin the MAC Freedom Tournament on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they host third-seeded Manhattanville College at McCarthy Stadium. Eastern will host Misericordia University in the other semifinal. The winners will play for the Championship next Saturday at the site of the highest seed.
