Overtime Goal Spoils Men’s Soccer Opener

WILKES-BARRE, PA (August 31, 2018) – Jay Ringer scored from 30 yards out in the 97 minutes to give the Alvernia University men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over King's College at McCarthy Stadium in the season-opening game on Friday afternoon.

Ringer's deep blast just got by the diving attempt of King's keeper Owen Geedey and found the upper right corner of the net 6:35 into the overtime period.

The Monarchs began the game strong as Zach Wolcott was able to unleash a couple shots in the opening minutes, but neither was on target. Alastair Dinnan nearly got King's on the board in the 22nd minute when Liam McLoughlin found him open cutting down the middle of the field but he shot sailed wide right.

McLoughlin had his own good look five minutes later and he found the Golden Wolves keeper running out to stop a thru pass from midfield, but his header sailed wide right of the open goal. The Monarchs had another great opportunity to score right before halftime but Alvernia's keeper was able to make a fantastic diving save on a shot off the foot of Kevin Kolaski.

King's kept the pressure up in the second half and had another good opportunity in the 60th minute when McLoughlin drew a foul right outside the box. However, Dinnan's free kick sailed just high of the crossbar and off the football goalpost. Neither team was able to get a quality look at goal the final 30 minutes of regulation and the Monarchs even held the Golden Wolves without a shot the whole second half.

In the overtime period Aidan DeCamillo had two chances at goal in the first couple of minutes but both efforts were saved by Luca Grippi in net. Dinnan had a great look in the 94th minutes but his shot curved just left of the goal.

King's held a 16-3 shot advantage in the game while taking eight corner kicks compared to just one for the Wolves. The game was a defensive battle as the teams combined for a combined seven shots on goal with King's recording five of those shots.

King's will look to rebound from the tough loss on Saturday when they will be right back at McCarthy Stadium to face Arcadia University at 2 p.m. on the second day of the Monarch/Royal Classic.
