FROSTBURG, MD (September 22, 2018) - The King's College men's soccer played host Frostburg State University to a 2-2 draw on Saturday at Bobcat Stadium in Frostburg, MD.
King's (4-3-2) and Frostburg State (3-5-1) settled for a draw after 110 minutes of a physical battle where 10 cards were issued. The Monarchs came out of the gates shooting as
Liam McLoughlin put a shot on goal just 20 seconds into the match. Bobcat keeper Joel Assal was able to make the save knocking the ball away.
Aidan Oyler put two shots wide before the Bobcats recorded their first shot in the eighth minute.
FSU put the Monarchs in unfamiliar territory this year as the Monarchs allowed a goal in the first half for the first time. Following a Monarch foul, Randy Putnam knocked the free kick from the right side towards the back post where Kaps Kapende was streaking and scored into the lower right.
KC responded in the 38th minute when
Sam Pipicelli headed in a corner kick by
Quentin Szeker-Cortes. The goal was Pipicelli's first of his career while Szeker-Cortes recorded his third assist of his rookie campaign. The Monarchs kept pushing to get the go-ahead goal in the first half but an attempt by
Michael Scardelletti was blocked and a shot by
Alastair Dinnan went wide.
Zach Wolcott gave King's a 2-1 lead in the 58th minute with a perfect strike from just outside the box after a beautiful backheel pass from
Liam McLoughlin. It was Wolcott's second career goal and first of the season while McLoughlin recorded the third assist of his career and first of the year.
Frostburg State responded in the 62nd minute when Blake Geatz header a corner kick in towards the net.
Owen Geedey was there for the Monarchs to keep the ball out of the back of the net. The Bobcats kept the pressure on the Monarch defense with two shots by Camilo Ortiz. His first shot went wide before Geedey knocked his second attempt over the goal line for a corner kick. FSU scored off the corner when Geatz sent a header to Mo Odolla at the back post. Odolla knocked the ball into the back of the net to even the score at 2.
King's responded right away as
Ryan Romeo sent a header on goal that Assal was able to just get a glove on and knock over the goal line for a corner kick. The Monarchs nearly scored on the corner but a shot by Dinnan sailed wide left. KC had another great look on a corner in the 74th minute. However,
August Axtman's header went wide as the teams stayed even after 90 minutes.
Frostburg State came out firing in the first couple minutes of the extra session. King's blocked three shots in the first five minutes. In the 98th minute McLoughlin nearly ended the match with a shot towards the upper left that Assal was just able to get a mitt on for a save.
The Bobcats opened the second overtime period with a couple of shots on goal but each time Geedey was there to make the save for King's. In the 109th minute Adullah Alsubaie sent a shot on goal off a free kick from a little outside the box that Assal made an initial save. The Monarchs jumped on the rebound and knocked it into goal for what seemed to be the game-winner, but the assistant referee ruled an offside wiping out the goal.
The Monarchs out-shot Frostburg 20-17 and held a 6-3 advantage on corner kicks. Romeo, Dinnan, and
Fabio Massa led the Monarchs with three shots each. Geedey equaled his season high with five saves in goal.
The team will be back in action on Wednesday when they head to Hackettstown, NJ to take on Centenary University at 4 p.m.
