Men’s Soccer Erupts For Three Late Goals To Defeat Juniata

WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 8, 2018) – The King's College soccer team scored three times in the second half to defeat visiting Juniata College 3-0 on a wet Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium in Wilkes-Barre.

The Monarchs (1-2-1) put together another great defensive showing to hand the Eagles (3-1) their first loss of the year by holding them to just two shots, neither of them on goal. King's was able to take 16 shots in the game and put nine of them on goal. KC dominated possession for much of the game and took 11 corner kicks while allowing JC to take just one. The Monarchs were also effective on their corner kicks as all three goals happened after corners were taken.

King's nearly got on the board early in the sixth minute when Aidan DeCamillo found a wide open net following a pass by Nik Verma caught the keeper out of goal but his header sailed wide right. A few minutes later Matthew Hesse found open space right in the middle of the box, but his attempt went straight to the keeper. Liam McLoughlin got in on the fun in the 11th minute with a shot from the right wing that Andrew Yeich was able to keep out of goal.

In the 20th minute Hesse took a free kick from about 30 yards out on the left wing that Yeich was able to just get a glove on and knock off the cross bar. Sam Pipicelli and August Axtman gave Yeich two more saves when their attempts from inside the box couldn't find the back of the net. The Eagles looked like they would take the lead in the 33rd minute when Jarrod Gibson sent a shot towards goal. However, Axtman stepped in the way of the shot preventing it from going into the back of the net. The Monarchs had one more chance in the first half to score when Alexander Showalter found himself open on the right side with just the keeper to beat, however, his attempt knocked off the right post and back into play.

The Monarchs came out of the locker room strong and were able to earn three corner kicks in the first eight minutes of the second half. The Eagles held tough and deflected all three kicks away from goal. McLoughlin and Ryan Romeo both had shots that hit the post as KC pushed for their first goal of the season.

That goal came early in the 68th minute when Aidan DeCamillo sent a corner kick in from the right side that Fabio Massio got a head on and sent into the back of the net. It was Massa's fourth career goal and DeCamillo's fourth career assist. DeCamillo wasn't done yet though as a minute later he headed a ball toward goal that Yeich was able to save.

KC added to the lead in the 80th minute after a corner kick from Hesse was knocked away by the keeper straight to the legs of Steven Grebe who rocketed a shot into the left side of the net for his second career goal. The crowd had barely stopped cheering when the Monarchs scored again on another corner kick by Hesse. This time Hesse's kick towards the box was intercepted by a Eagle defender who tried sending it back towards to goal line but the ball found the back of the net for an own goal.

Owen Geedey picked up his 24th career shutout without needing to make a save.

The Monarchs will have little time to rest as they will be back in action tomorrow afternoon right back at McCarthy Stadium at 1 p.m. hosting Berkeley College of New Jersey.
