WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 1, 2019) --- The King's College men's soccer team began the month of October with a dominating 1-0 victory over visiting Penn College on Tuesday evening at McCarthy Stadium.
The Monarchs (8-2-0) did not allow the Wildcats (1-7-1) a shot on goal and controlled possession for 60 percent of the match. KC put 10 of their 20 shots on goal while holding an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
King's barley let the Wildcats touch the ball in the first 15 minutes of play.
Aidan DeCamillo took the first two shots of the match with his first attempt going high and wide right and his second attempt was blocked.
Nik Verma unleashed a rocket in the 19th minute that went right at the PC keeper for a save.
August Axtman nearly scored on a header in the 32nd minute but his attempt was grabbed out of the air by Braeden Eckard before it could cross the line. In the 35th minute
Aziz Atiyeh sent a long shot towards the bottom right that Eckard was able to just get a hand on and knock out for a corner kick. The Monarchs finished the first half with 10 shots including four on goal but were unable to find the back of the net. The Monarchs kept the ball in their offensive half of the field for over 60 percent of the half.
The Monarchs came out just as strong in the second half as they looked for the go-ahead goal.
Pat Holton and Verma had rockets from distance to the bottom right knocked kept out of the net by Joshua Stanley who relieved Eckard at halftime in goal. Axtman had his header off a corner kick in the 58th minute scooped up by Stanley while DeCamillo tried to beat Stanley high in the 62nd minute.
King's was finally able to get on the board with the lone goal of the match in the 70th minute as a Penn College defender knocked a corner kick from the left side into the upper left for an own goal. PC's lone shot of the match came in the 74th minute when Daniel Jackson found space outside the box and sent the ball very wide left.
DeCamillo took a team-high four shots putting one on goal. Axtman, Verma, and Atiyeh each had their two shots go on goal while
Alex Showalter came off the bench with three total shots.
Connor McKeown did not have to make a save in picking up his first career shutout.
The Monarchs will now turn their attention to the beginning of conference play as they host defending MAC Freedom Champion Eastern University at McCarthy Stadium on Saturday at 4 pm in a rematch of last year's title match.
