DALLAS, PA (October 5, 2019) -- Misericordia University senior quarterback Brady Williams hit Sam Gillison with 44 seconds to play to put the Cougars ahead for good, as the King's College football team fell for the first time in 2019 with a 22-16 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) defeat from Mangelsdorf Field Saturday.
The Monarchs (3-1, 1-1 MAC) jumped on the scoreboard first in the opening quarter, as junior
Brandon Cohen caught a crossing route over the middle and rumbled in from 11 yards out to put King's up 7-0. After King's forced a turnover on downs on a 4th and 1 stop, the Monarchs marched 15 plays over 58 yards before
Justin Timonte cashed in a 31-yard field goal with 9:03 to go in the first half.
King's would force a punt on the next drive but the Monarchs got backed up, giving the ball back to the hosts at the King's 37. Misericordia needed four plays and 1:29 before Williams connected with Gillison from 12 yards out to make it 10-7 just before halftime.
On the opening kick-off of the second half, Misericordia took the lead at 14-10 as Michael Gawlik raced 89 yards for a touchdown down the right sideline to put King's down for only the second time this season. The only other time KC trailed in a game was a 7-6 at Hartwick, a game King's would win 41-19.
The next drive, the Monarchs worked the ball down to the Misericordia 5-yard line, but the Cougars stopped
Jordan Downes at the three-yard line to deny King's of points. After the Monarchs forced a three-and-out, KC got the ball back at the Cougar 45-yard line, and Timonte hit from 42 yards out to cap a 8-play, 20-yard drive while making the score 14-13.
King's would get the ball back in the fourth quarter after another fine defensive stop, and Timonte connected on his third field goal of the game from 23-yards away to put the Monarchs back on top at 16-14.
The next possession for Misericordia, King's forced another three-and-out, seting up a 10-play, 6:15 drive that pushed the Monarchs down to the MU 7-yard line. On 4th-and-2, Misericordia would deny the Monarchs though, getting the ball back with 5 minutes to go.
On the next drive, the Cougars moved the ball to their own 49-yard line, and Williams hit Gillison for an apparent touchdown but an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty nullified the score but put MU at the King's 22. Three plays later, Williams rolled to his right and connected with Gillison with the eventual game-winner from six yards out to make the score 22-16 after a two-point conversion was good.
King's got the ball back with 36 seconds to go, but would only work the ball down to the Cougar 40 yard line before time expired.
Moore was 29-of-39 for 262 yards and a touchdown, while
Gabe Boccella finished with nine catces for 79 yards. Cohen set a career-high with nine grabs on 64 yards, while Joseph Herman made two catches for 35 yards. Downes, who came in as Division III's top runner, finished with 148 yards on the ground while making six catches for 69 yards.
Timonte was 3-for-4 on field goal attempts, making his only extra point attempt as well. Defensively,
Yusef Wheeler made a team-high six tackles, including a tackle for loss, while
Mando Sallavanti made five tackles as well.
The Monarchs held a 25-13 edge in first downs on the day, and outgained the Cougars 378-254. King's was 9-for-20 on third downs, held a 39:05-19:29 edge in time of possession scored just four times in six chances inside the 20.
Williams was 16-of-25 for 168 yards and two touchdowns for MU.
King's (3-1, 1-1 MAC) will now look to upset No. 13 Delaware Valley University next week on the road in Doylestown, PA in more MAC play.
