Women’s Ice Hockey Dealt Tough Loss By Anna Maria

PITTSTON, PA (February 1, 2019) – The King's College women's ice hockey team put together a noble effort on Friday evening against the visiting Amcats of Anna Maria College as two first period goals were the difference in a 2-0 defeat from the Revolution Ice Centre in Pittston.

The Amcats scored a power play goal to open the scoring at 9:29 as McKenna Naumchik sent a shot through a crowd of people from near the blue line. AMC increased the lead to 2-0 nearly six minutes later after Riley Cote scooped up a loose puck inside the King's defensive zone. The forward then sent a shot towards the middle of the ice that deflected off a King's stick and into the back of the net.

The Monarchs didn't let the deficit deter them as they pressed for a goal in the final minute of the period. After Erin King and Morgan Almon put shots wide Josée Aitken and King put three shots on goal that Anna Maria goalie Gabrielle Ohanesian was forced to make nice saves on. Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the second period as the Amcats outshot KC 16-7 in a back-and-forth period where the teams exchanged blows. King's best chance to score occurred while on their only power play of the period as the Monarchs fired shot after shot at the net. Caitlin Redden and King had their attempts saved by Ohanesian while Maggie Gould and Tessa Schaefer-Flynn sent shots wide during the extra woman advantage.

The Monarchs continued the pressure in the third period as they looked to light the lamp. However, Amcat netminder Gabrielle Ohanesian was the star of the period making 12 saves including seven while killing off three penalties. The Monarchs controlled play for much of the period and had another seven shots blocked by the AMC defenders. Ohanesian finished the game with 31 saves to record her first career shutout.

King recorded nine of the 31 shots on goal for the Monarchs. Redden added eight while Aitken took six. Mary Deyell and Gould added three each while Almon and Meghan Mietlicki record one each. Kelly Tuffy had a great game defensively blocking a season-high eight shots. As a team King's blocked 14 shots. Emma Zeveney had a strong game in net making 32 saves. The Monarchs held a 20-16 advantage in the faceoff circle led by King with nine wins in 16 attempts. Kellie Munro won eight of her 14 attempts while Schaefer-Flynn was productive winning three of her four.

The teams will hit the ice again tomorrow afternoon to wrap up their weekend series back at Revolution Ice Centre at 2 p.m. in Pittston.
