ASTON, PA (February 16, 2019) –
Emma Zeveney stopped 45 of 49 shots for the King's College women's ice hockey team as the host Neumann University Knights defeated the Monarchs 4-0 in the final regular season game for both teams.
The sophomore netminder recorded her third-highest save total of the season and second-most in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) game. Zeveney also benefited from a stout defensive performance as the Monarchs also blocked 18 shots. Neumann (8-16-1, 7-10-1 UCHC) did their part in clinching the sixth and final qualifying spot in next week's conference tournament with the win. Elmira defeated Stevenson 5-1 to allow the Knights to leapfrog the Mustangs for the final spot.
Sid Squires and Katelyn Brown had two goals each for the Knights. Squires gave the hosts the lead with her third goal of the season at 5:54 of the first period off an assist by Jordyn Cholish. Brown made it 2-0 in the second period with her 12th of the season with assists by Jackie Schneider and Angeline Taiariol. Squires and Brown added another goal each in the third period.
The Monarchs were very strong on the penalty kill in the game not allowing a goal of six Knight power play opportunities.
Erin King and
Caitlin Redden had five shots each to lead the Monarch attack. Josee Aitken added three shots while
Kellie Munro and
Maggie Gould had two apiece. Munro also won eight of her 13 faceoff attempts. Zeveney was excellent in goal for the Monarchs making 16 saves in the first, 20 in the second, and then nine saves in the third period.
Squires had two goals on eight shots while Brown recorded two goals on five. Cholish led the Knights with 10 shots and won seven of 11 faceoffs. The Monarch defense did an excellent job on senior Jackie Schneider, holding the high-scoring forward to just one assist on five shots on her senior day. Helen Cooney made 19 saves to pick up the shutout victory.
The Monarchs close out their second season with a 1-23-1 overall record with much improvement from their inaugural season. King's had the program's first-ever win while playing with just 15 skaters on the ice for most of the season. KC scored a program record three goals in a game twice this season while also finding the back of the net against top-ranked Elmira.
