Monarchs Split With Colonels in MAC Freedom Doubleheader

WILKES-BARRE, PA (April 13, 2019) – King's College softball split their doubleheader against rival Wilkes University for their fourth conference win of the season. The Monarchs move to 14-13 overall and 4-6 in Middle Atlantic Conference games.

Game 1: King's 5, Wilkes 4
It was a slow start for game one as both defenses held the run count to zero until the third inning. Wilkes would score first tallying three.
 
It was a stalemate between the Monarchs and the Colonels for two more innings as the score remained 3-0 until King's got on the board in the bottom of the fifth.
 
Mindina Lieback would get on base with a walk as Taylor Norris was next to bat. Norris singled to centerfield advancing Mackenzie Yori to third and Lieback to second.
 
With bases loaded, Kristi Ann Skok came in to clean it up for the Monarchs and was able to notch a hit. She reached on a fielder's choice as each player advanced a base and Yori was tagged at home.
 
With two outs, Gabriella Medina stepped into the box and knocked one through the left side as the Wilkes shortstop struggled to make the throw and recorded an error as Medina made it to first. Norris and Lieback were able to score two runs for King's.
 
Wilkes answered with another run in the sixth pushing the score to 4-2. It was a comeback win in the bottom of the seventh for the Monarchs.
 
Skok got on base again with a drive down the left field line and Medina followed with a center field single. Both Monarchs advanced on the throw, Skok to second and Medina home to put the score at 4-3.
 
The Colonels would switch pitchers, but Marisa Mauro would single to right center and bring Medina in to tie the game up with just one out.
 
The Monarchs would score on a walk and take game one as Lieback was sent to first and Kris Kocher home.
 
Kocher was in the circle as she goes 6-5 on the season allowing ten hits and striking out three batters in 29 at bats.

Game 2: King's 4, Wilkes 2
Wilkes came back hard in game two scoring two runs in their first at bat and one more in the fifth inning to make the score 3-0.
 
King's answered with their only two runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth, Yori and Norris recorded runs as Yori crossed home on an error by second base and Norris was brought in by a Medina single to right field.


Wilkes scored two more times in the top of the seventh as the Monarchs weren't able to recover and the Colonels left with the win.
 
Nicole Kirse took the loss and goes 5-7 so far on the season allowing nine hits and four runs in 30 batters faced.

King's softball stays on the road for their next two games first heading to Keystone College on Monday at 3:00 p.m. in La Plume. Pa.
