NEW PALTZ, NY (September 14, 2019) ---
Aidan DeCamillo led the King's College men's soccer team to a thrilling 3-2 victory over SUNY New Paltz on Saturday afternoon with a pair of goals at South Turf Field in New Paltz.
DeCamillo, coming off Wednesday's hat trick, scored the game-winning goal, his second of the match and fifth of the week, on a rocket to the upper right from roughly 30 yards out late in the 84th minute. His goal extended the KC (4-1-0) winning streak to four matches while also handing the Hawks (4-2-0) their first loss of the year on their home turf.
The Monarchs got off to a good start as
Matthew Hesse put a shot on goal off a corner kick 5:28 into the match that was saved by Hawk keeper Marc DePasquale. In the 14th minute
August Axtman scored his fourth goal of the season to give King's a 1-0 lead. The Hawks answered right back five minutes later in the 19th minute with Coltan Goodwine's first score of the season.
In the 25th minute DeCamillo gave KC back the lead with a beautiful goal off a volley. He would have another chance to increase the advantage in the 30th minute but his shot was denied by DePasquale as the teams headed into the break with KC leading 2-1.
The Monarchs had the first opportunity of the second half as
Alastair Dinnan put a shot on goal in the opening minutes. However, DePasquale was there to keep the ball out of the net. The Hawks found an equalizer in the 53rd minute as James Maltes scored his fifth goal of the year off an assist by the very dangerous Kevin Doorley.
Both teams pressed over the next 20 minutes for the go-ahead goal but neither team was able to score. The Hawks had two great opportunities in the 82nd minute on ball that looked like they were headed for the back of the net but both times
Ryan Romeo was there to knock the ball away. In the 84th minute the Monarchs took a free kick outside the box on the left side. The ball played in was kicked back out by a Hawks defender right to DeCamillo who unleashed a rocket into the upper right to give the Monarchs the lead.
New Paltz put pressure on the Monarch defense to find another equalizer but Connon McKeown came up with two huge saves in the 86th and 87th minute to preserve the win. A last second shot off a corner kick sailed high of the net right as time expired.
For the first time this season King's was outshot by their opponent 16-11 including 11-8 on goal. The Hawks also held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks. However, McKeown was fantastic in net making a few great saves to pick up his first career victory.
DeCamillo added to his already amazing week with a pair of goals on three shots. Axtman tallied his fourth goal of the season on the defender's only shot of the match.
King's will look to keep the winning streak going on Tuesday when they make the short trip up to La Plume to take on Keystone College under the lights at 7 pm from the Keystone Turf Field.
