Monarch Wrestling Tops Keystone To Highlight Senior Day Tri-Match

2/14/2020 11:46:00 PM

WILKES-BARRE, PA (February 14, 2020) -- The King's College wrestling team honored lone senior Dakota Quick before the first of two matches Friday evening for his hard work and dedication to the team, and the senior responded with two wins as the Monarchs knocked off Keystone College 37-17 before falling to the University of Scranton 39-9 in action from McGrane Gymnasium.

In the opening match, the two teams traded forfeits at 125 and 133 before freshman Robert Zelinski pulled away for a major decision win over Ethan Harvey of Keystone to make the score 10-6 King's. Colby Bronzberg responded for the Giants with a technical fall victory at 149 over King's Colby Spencer to put Keystone back ahead at 11-10. The Monarchs regained the lead thanks to a forfeit at 157, but Keystone responded with a pin at 165 to once again lead 17-16.

The Monarchs would take control from that point, thanks to a gutty effort from Isaac Mensah at 174, as the sophomore battled to a 9-4 decision victory to push the Monarchs back ahead 19-17.

Freshman Billy Grace trailed early in the match to Brendan Hamilton, going into the second period down 6-4. The young Monarch 184 wrestler would start on top in the second, and after an escape used a takedown and reverse roll to get Hamilton on his back where he would pick up his third pin of the season at 0:55 of the second.

From that point on King's earned two more forfeit victories to post its' first home victory of the year. It was also the first home win for King's since the defeating Keystone back in 2017.

The Monarchs would turn around and battle Scranton right after defeating Keystone, and stuck with the Royals in a bunch of contested matches. After a forfeit put Scranton up 6-0, Quick was back on the mat at 133 looking to get KC back into it. That's just what he did, as he knocked off Shane Reynolds by fall 52 seconds into the third period after shooting Reynolds down to his back and getting the shoulders down seconds later.

Anthony Clarizio would put Scranton back up 12-6, but the Monarchs wouldn't go away as Colby Spencer worked a brilliant match at 141, defeating Dante Simeti 5-2 to make the score 12-9. That was all the Monarchs would get though, as Scranton was able to earn the next six matches to pull away.

The Monarchs will return to action next Friday evening, February 21 at Wilkes University at 7 p.m. in the final regular season dual meet of the year.
