Aitken's OT Game-Winner Lifts Monarchs Past Alvernia, 3-2

READING, PA (February 22, 2020) -- Junior Josee Aitken scored with five seconds remaining in overtimes Saturday, lifting the King's College women's ice hockey team to its third victory over Alvernia University season with a 3-2 win over the Golden Wolves in action from Body Zone Ice Arena.

King's had to battle back though twice in the game though, as Alvernia (4-21, 0-17 UCHC) scored a pair of power play goals to take leads of 1-0 and 2-1. After a scoreless first period that saw junior goalkeeper Emma Zeveney make 14 saves, the Golden Wolves cashed in on the power play as Olivia Gilda tallied at 3:00 of the second with help of Abby Reisinger.

The Monarchs wouldn't go away though, scoring their second short-handed goal in the last two days as as Aitken picked off a pass and went on a coast-to-coast rush up the left side. As she made a power move to the net, the puck was pushed off her stick in front, but sophomore Alexa Kovaly was there to tuck home the loose puck for her first career King's College goal.

King's would get three chances on the power play in the second period, including a minor midway through the stanza but King's couldn't take the lead as the game went to the third deadlocked at one.

Early on in the third, the Golden Wolves regained their lead as Alex Robertson scored from Reisinger and Gilida with the extra man with just under 14 minutes to go in regulation. Just over 10 minutes later though with 3:50 to go, junior Raeann Clancey continued her breakout season with another big play to tie the score at two apiece.

After a shot from the point on a power play from Aitken was fended off, junior captain Mary Deyell had her shot saved before the loose puck off the rebound was shoveled in by Clancey on the left doorstep of the net. It was Clancey's sixth goal of the season, while Aitken's sixth assist was the most on the team.

In overtime, King's had the momentum most of the extra session but with under a minute to go Abby Radcliffe of Alvernia had Zeveney beat but her shot clanged off the cross bar and out.

On the ensuing rebound, freshman Ali Noeding weaved her way out of the zone, through the neutral zone and into the Golden Wolves zone with under 15 seconds to play. As she brought the puck back to her forehand in the slot, she fired on goal and the rebound was pounced on by Aitken. The junior had enough on her shot to push the puck into the back of the net for the game-winner with 5.8 seconds left. The victory marked the first overtime win for King's in program history.

Aitken led the way offensively, as she posted her second three-point game of her career and second against Alvernia of the season. SHe also won 28 of her 39 face-offs on the night, while finishing +3 for the Monarchs. Sophomore Tessa Schaefer-Flynn didn't score, but had a very good game going 24-12 on face-offs and blocking two shots.

Junior Caitlin Redden led all King's players with 10 shots, while sophomore defenseman Meghan Mietlicki also finished with seven shots. King's outshot the Golden Wolves 51-46 for the game, the fifth time over the last two seasons KC has outshot its opponent. Zeveney posted 44 saves in the victory, including stopping 17 shots in the third period.

King's finishes its season 3-21-1 and 2-15 in UCHC, but tripled its win total from 2018-19 as the program continues to improve going into 2020-21.
