ORLANDO, FL (March 5, 2020) -- The King's College women's tennis team had been so close all week long on their Spring Break trip to Florida, dropping its last three matches 5-4 but turned the tables on Muskingum University Thursday as the Monarchs earned a hard fought 5-4 win from the USTA National Campus in Orlando, FL.
The Monarchs (4-6) started things off at No. 3 doubles with a quick 8-0 win by
Lauren Lamarca and
Addie Atkins, as the pair moved to 7-5 as a pair this season together. King's clinched the lead heading to singles with the next finish, as junior
Emily Fernandez and senior
Alexis Zalutko picked up their eight win of the season as a duo with an 8-3 win at No. 1 over Kayla Hall and Evelyn Pauquette.
At No. 2 doubles, sophomore
Mikayla Reynolds and junior
Diana Rodriguez pushed McKinzie Buckmaster and Gracie Andrews but drop an 8-6 final going into singles. Fernandez would help the Monarchs restore their two-point match lead with a whitewashing of Andrews at No. 1 singles, as the junior for King's earned a 6-0, 6-0 win for her 49th career singles victory at King's while moving to 12-3 in 2019-20.
After a win by Muskingum at No. 2 singles, Atkins would get her second win of the day and her ninth singles victory of the season with a clean 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 6 spot. King's would clinch the match win moments later, as Lamarca posted her ninth victory on the year with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Emma Lewis at No. 5. Lamarca has now won three of her last four singles' matches.
The tightest match of the day came at No. 4 singles, as Buckmaster and Reynolds pushed each other to a super-tiebreaker. Reynolds rallied from a 6-4 loss in the opening set to win all six games in the second stanza to force the 10-point breaker. Both competitors fought back and forth, but Buckmaster was able to earn the final point in a 10-8 to claim the 6-4, 0-6, 10-8 win. It was the fourth match this year that Reynolds has gone to a super tiebreaker.
King's is off for over two weeks competitively while the weather mellows out before getting back onto the courts at Susquehanna University Saturday, March 21 at noon in non-conference play.
