Men's Soccer Comes Up Short in MAC Freedom Semifinal Against Misericordia

WILKES-BARRE, PA (November 3, 2021) --- The second-seeded King's College men's soccer team put together a strapping effort on Wednesday evening in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom Semifinal match but the visiting Cougars of Misericordia University scored a late first half goal to defeat the Monarchs 1-0 in live action from McCarthy Stadium.

The Monarchs (9-6-1) created several early chances in the opening 10 minutes of the match, with four consecutive corner kicks. Unfortunately, they were unable to capitalize on any of the set pieces. The Cougars favored the counter-attack heavily in the first half and nearly connected on a chance in the 18th minute when Max Gariano found himself on a solo breakaway against King's goalkeeper Cole Catherman. However, Catherman came up huge for the Monarchs making a beautiful kick save to knock Gariano's shot wide of the goal.

Misericordia earned a free kick in the 34th minute which was taken by Luke Ferrarese and sent into the box towards the head of Drew Weaver who placed a header past Catherman and into the top right corner.

Feeling the pressure of the MU goal, King's took to the attack and nearly found an equalizer in the 36th minute when Chris O'Neil header cracked the crossbar. The Monarchs fired off a total of five shots in the final 10 minutes of the first half, but were unable to find the back of the net.

KC continued to battle into the second half and almost scored again in the 67th minute when Evan Egnatovich recieved a through ball from Liam McLoughlin, but his shot was saved by the Misericordia goalkeeper, Andrew Daubenspeck.

The Monarchs continued to press the action the remainer of the second half, but were unable to convert on any of their opportunities.

Alex Showalter led the Monarchs with four shots, while Catherman recorded seven saves in the match. Misericordia outshot King's 18-12, while King's held a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.

KC finished the year with 25 goals and 23 assists, and held their opponents to 22 goals and 18 assists.
