OWINGS MILLS, MD (November 6, 2021) -- On a sunny afternoon in Owings Mills, Md., the King's College football team dropped their final Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) finale, 35-10, against Stevenson University in Mustang Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Monarchs drop to 4-5 overall, 3-5 against MAC opponents, while the Mustangs improve to 4-5 overall and 4-3 in the MAC.
Stevenson struck first on their opening drive as they totaled 12 plays for 94 yards over 5:27 of action with a seven-yard touchdown run from Kevin Joppy. A slow first quarter saw the Monarchs with the ball to start the second. After a punt from
Anthony Prato, King's forced a three-and-out from the Mustangs.
On their following offensive drive, it looked as though they would be punting the ball away again, but
Brendan Mozeleski was able to deliver on a fake punt with a 16-yard run to extend the drive. A King's penalty on the next play provided a challenge for the Monarchs offense and forced the end of the King's drive after taking 4:32 off the game clock, still trailing 7-0, with 7:46 to play in the half.
King's closed out the half with a length 14-play drive with 66 yards of offense over the final 3:45 in the opening half in Mustang Stadium as
Kyle Prescavage converted a 32-yard field goal to put King's on the board, 7-3, into the halftime break.
The Mustangs came out of the break with momentum as Ryan Sedgwick found Darian Littlejohn from 65-yards out for a touchdown to build a 14-3 lead with 14:11 to go in the third quarter. The duo connected again on the following Stevenson possession, this time for a nine-yard touchdown reception, to build their 21-3 lead with 7:03 left in the third.
King's responded on their next drive after a 62 yard kickoff return from
Michael DiGregorio put the Monarchs in great field position to start the drive.
Tyler Moore hit
Gabe Boccella for a 14-yard touchdown pass on the third play of the drive, and a Prescavage extra-point attempt was successful as King's cut the Mustangs lead down to 21-10 with 5:42 to go in the third.
Stevenson delivered on their next two possessions to start the fourth for the final points of the game, first off a two-yard run from John Wadkins then on Sedgwick and Littlejohn's third touchdown reception of the game, posting the final score, 35-10.
Tekoah Guedes went 8-for-17 from the pocket for 53 yards and adding 11 rushes for 28 yards, while Moore completed four of his 10 attempts for 31 yards and a touchdown. First year
Shemar Ellis led the Monarchs run game with 74 yards on 13 carries, and Boccella led the receivers with five catches for 44 yards and a touchdown.
Mozeleski and
Joseph Carchio paced the defensive unit with nine total tackles, as Mozeleski added 0.5 tackles for a loss of three yards and Carchio recorded 1.0 tackles for a three-yard loss.
Elijah Demosthene played well for the Monarchs secondary, recording five tackles, two pass break ups, and an interception.
Stevenson quarterback Ryan Sedgwick went 19-for-26 with 281 yards of offense, three touchdowns, and an interception. Brandon Walker led the Mustangs on the ground with 71 yards on 14 carries, and Darian Littlejohn recorded 188 yards on nine catches. Brennen Wright led the Stevenson defense with nine tackles, and five Mustangs recorded tackles for loss in the win.
As a team, the Monarchs recorded 232 yards of total offense with 16 first downs while going a perfect 2-for-2 on red zone conversions.
King's will finish the regular season at home next Saturday, November 13 as the Monarchs are set to host cross-town rival Wilkes University at noon in McCarthy Stadium in non-conference play for the annual Mayor's Cup game.
