WILKES-BARRE, PA (May 4, 2021) -- Undefeated and top-seed Wilkes University advanced to the 2021 Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) semifinals Tuesday evening, as the Colonels were able to defeat the King's College women's tennis team 5-0 in play from Ralston Athletic Complex.
The Monarchs (1-9) played well in doubles action, including pushing No. 3 doubles to the brink thanks to great plays from first-year players
Braelan Drollas and
Jackie Costello. The pairing would eventually fall to Alexi Cieri and Kaitlyn O'Neil in a spirited battle 8-5 to finish doubles play. Prior to that match, King's dropped a pair of matches 8-2 at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
In singles play, junior
Mikayla Reynolds played her final match for the Monarchs at No. 5 singles but would fall to Cieri 6-0, 6-0 to put the Colonels up 4-0. In the clinching match, Sarah Malone topped
Addie Atkins from King's 6-1, 6-1 to earn the win for Wilkes. Due to playoff rules, all of the other matches were stopped when the match reached completion. Drollas was playing well at No. 6 singles before the match was stopped, while senior
Alexis Zalutko was also making things interesting at No. 2 singles.
The Monarchs saw the final match for
Diana Rodriguez, Zalutko,
Lauren Lamarca and
Mikayla Reynolds Tuesday, as the team will look to regroup in 2021-22.
