WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 18, 2021) -- Visiting Lycoming College spoiled Homecoming 2021 for the King's College football team, as the Warriors scored 21 straight points to open Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) play with a 28-8 win over the Monarchs in play from Betzler Field in McCarthy Stadium Saturday. Lycoming moved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the MAC, while King's falls to 1-1 and 0-1 in league action.
The contest was very much a defensive battle through the opening 25 minutes, as the Monarchs were the only team with points in the first quarter as they took advantage of a bad snap that ended up in the Warriors end zone for a safety at 7:38 of the first quarter. The King's defense would force a pick, two 3-and-outs along with a blocked field goal over the first four Lycoming drives but couldn't do much offensively missing a field goal and tossing two interceptions as well.
The Warriors finally punched through, converting a nine-play, 3:57 drive with a five-yard touchdown rush from senior quarterback Elijah Shemory with 5:05 left in the half. After a punt by King's, Lycoming went right down the field on six plays and Tyjah During got open for a 19-yard touchdown reception from Shemory with 57 seconds left in the second quarter to send the game to halftime with a score of 14-2 Lycoming.
The Warriors kept the momentum going into the third, as Kyle Powell broke multiple tackles and powered in from 25 yards out to make it 21-2 with 13:50 to go in the fourth quarter. King's moved the ball into Lycoming multiple times in the second half, but gave the ball up on downs three times with its lone score coming on a five-yard touchdown reception from
Brandon Cohen with 3:00 minutes to play.
After an onside kick attempt went unsuccessful, Joey Guida put the game on ice with a 14-yard rushing touchdown. Lycoming outgained King's 346-268 on the contest, though the Monarchs led the first-down column, 15-14.
Tyler Moore was 27-for-41 for 246 yards and three interceptions, being sacked four times, while
Tim Costantino collected eight grabs for 79 yards. Cohen finished with six catches for 39 yards, and junior
Joe Herman made four receptions for 34 yards. First-year
Brennan Robinson led the Monarchs with 95 all-purpose yards Saturday.
Defensively for King's,
Brendan Mozeleski had 12 total stops to lead the Monarchs, adding 1.5 tackles for loss. Junior
Joseph Carchio posted eight stops, and classmate also posted six stops.
Myles Shelton also posted four tackles and one for loss.
Lycoming saw Shemory finished 14-for-20 for 214 yards and a score, while also running for 21 yards. Guida rushed for 61 yards on 13 carries, and Powell tallied 40 yards as well. Tre' Leach finished with three catches for a game-high 101 yards, and During led the Warriors with five receptions. Cole Seniors, Sam Pittsman and Abubakar Audu each had eight stops, while Pittsman finished with a team high 2.5 tackles for loss. Hunter Campbell also picked off two passes for Lyco.
King's (1-1) will return to action next Saturday at 1 p.m. in Annville, PA, taking on Lebanon Valley College in the first road game of the season for the Monarchs.
