Dominant First Half Leads King's to Win at Lycoming

WILLIAMSPORT, PA (October 1, 2022) -- The King's College football team won their second consecutive game and remained unbeaten on the road in 2022 as they used a 21-10 halftime advantage to hand the host Lycoming College the 28-23 loss on the road on Saturday afternoon. At David Person Field in the MAC match up, the Monarchs improve to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play, while the Warriors fall to 2-2 and 1-1 in the MAC.

Both teams traded empty possessions early before the Lycoming (2-2, 1-1 MAC) offense settled in to convert on a 39-yard field goal from Ian Plankenhorn on a six-play drive with 3:39 to go in the opening quarter. King's (3-1, 2-1 MAC) had a quick response as it just took one play for Tyler Moore to find Tyler Carey from 75 yards out for the Monarchs first score of the game. The extra-point attempt from Kyle Prescavage was successful as King's held a 7-3 lead going into the second quarter.

The Monarchs defense came out strong in the second, forcing the Warriors to settle for field goal attempts on their first two drives of the period as both were wide left. King's converted after the second missed attempt as Moore found Carey again, this time for a 47-yard reception, to cap off a seven-play, 80-yard drive over 2:39 of play as the Monarchs built a 14-3 edge.

A quick three-and-out from the Monarchs defense gave King's another opportunity to tack points on the board before the break. This time, it only took three plays for Moore to complete a pass to Brandon Cohen from 46 yards out as Prescavage converted his third attempt of the game to put King's ahead, 21-3 with 7:08 to play in the half.

A pair of scoreless drives set up Lycoming's first touchdown of the game with 3:18 to play in the opening half, delivering on a four-play, 52 yard drive as Elijah Shemory completed a pass to Brandon Timothy for 23 yards. The King's defense came up with big plays down the stretch as Tyler Carey blocked a 39-yard field goal attempt and Alex Tristan intercepted a pass with 21 seconds left in the half as the Monarchs maintained their 21-10 lead heading into the locker room.

King's stormed out of the break to put seven more points on the board in their first drive, converting a 12-play, 69 yard drive over 6:01 of the game clock as Shemar Ellis ran the ball in from one yard out to increase the Monarchs lead to 28-10 with 7:52 to go in the third.

More stellar performances from the King's defense came out in the ensuing drive as Joseph Carchio intercepted a pass from Elijah Shemory and returned the ball 29 yards to put a cap on a 12-play drive from the Warriors. Lycoming tacked on another score to inch within 28-17 on an eight-yard completion to Heath Jones to end the third period and head into the final 15 minutes of play.

The Warriors maintained momentum to start the fourth as they scored on a nine-play drive thanks to a five-yard rush from Elijah Shemory, but the King's defense stopped Lycoming ont the two-point conversion to keep their lead to just 28-23 with 9:17 to play in regulation.

With Lycoming driving, it was the King's defense yet again to deliver in the MAC contest as Brendan Mozeleski sacked quarterback Elijah Shemory and forced a fumble that he recovered with 1:04 remaining.

The Warriors defense stopped King's after a four-play drive to give Lycoming once last chance to send the game into overtime, but excellent defensive plays by Teone Sherrod, Amir Gibson, and Dylan White held Lycoming to a three-and-out. The Monarchs regained possession with 10 seconds on the game clock, and they ran out the game clock to earn the gritty 28-23 win over Lycoming in MAC play.

Tyler Moore was solid in the pocket in the game, completing 12 of his 19 attempts for 260 yards and three touchdowns. Jayon Hailey led the Monarchs run game with 48 yards, while Tyler Carey paced the King's receivers with 122 yards on two catches, both for touchdowns. Michael DiGregorio and Brandon Cohen also posted solid performances as DiGregorio totaled five receptions for 55 yards while Cohen added two catches for 49 yards and a touchdown.

Jassiem Lettsome led the Monarchs defensive efforts with eight total tackles, including 3.0 tackles for a loss of 18 yards and 1.5 sacks for a loss of 16 yards. Trevor Gleason and Dylan White each added six tackles, with both White and Amir Gibson also forcing fumbles in the win.

On special teams, Anthony Prato averaged 32.0 yards per punt on his four attempts, while Kyle Prescavage added an average of 55.8 yards per kickoff on five attempts.

Lycoming's Elijah Shemory went 18-for-47 for 185 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions, while Heath Jones ran for a team-high 46 yards. The Warriors defense was led by Hunter Campbell and Cole Senior with 13 tackles each, while Joey Rivituso added 11. Additionally, Cole Senior posted 3.5 tackles for a loss of 15 yards and 2.5 sacks for a loss of 13 yards.
