Explosive Start Leads King's Football to Win at Alvernia

READING, PA (October 29, 2022) -- In their final trip outside of Wilkes-Barre for the regular season, the King's College football team posted 28 unanswered first-half points on their way to a dominant 41-14 win at Alvernia University on Saturday afternoon in the MAC contest. The Monarchs now improve to 7-1 overall and 6-1 in the MAC, while the Golden Wolves fall to 2-6 with a 1-5 MAC mark.

The Monarchs dominance started in the opening drive as Teone Sherrod intercepted the Golden Wolves' pass on just the second play of the game and returned the ball 36 yards to the Alvernia 12-yard line to set up their opening drive touchdown. It took just two plays and 12 seconds of game clock before Shemar Ellis ran it in from four yards out to give King's the early 7-0 lead.

The King's (7-1, 6-1 MAC) defense forced a punt from Alvernia (2-6, 1-5 MAC) on their next drive before striking again. In their 12-play, 75-yard drive over 5:56 of play, Tyler Moore connected with Tyler Carey from 17 yards out to push their lead to 14-0 with 5:00 to go in the quarter.

After three empty possessions in the game, King's put their first points of the second quarter on the board as it was Jayon Hailey capped off a length 11-play, 88-yard drive over 6:13 of action with a 14-yard touchdown run as King's saw their lead increase to 21-0 with 7:01 to play in the half.

The Monarchs defense delivered again as this time it was Trevor Gleason to intercept the Golden Wolves with a three-yard return as King's gained possession on the Alvernia 47-yard line with 3:10 left. Over the next 2:38 of game clock, the Monarchs used six plays that ended with a 20-yard touchdown run from Russell Minor-Shaw as the King's lead swelled to 28-0 heading into the halftime break.

Alvernia broke through their offensive struggles on their first drive of the second half as Owen Morton recorded a nine-yard touchdown reception to put the hosts on the board and close within 28-7. Neither team could find a rhythm in the final 5:36 of the third quarter, but a 40-yard completion to Tyler Carey ended the period with the Monarchs driving. Three plays later, Hailey ran the ball for six yards to earn his second touchdown of the game before Alyssa Accordino came on to tack on the extra point for her second collegiate point as King's led, 35-7, with 13:12 to play in the MAC game.

The Golden Wolves would score one final time on the next drive behind a 35-yard touchdown reception from Neeko Scurlock, but King's had an immediate response as Tommy Souriyavong recorded his first collegiate touchdown on a 10-yard catch to secure the 41-14 win at the Alvernia University Turf Field on Saturday afternoon.
