Late Bears Surge Hands Football Loss in Centennial-MAC Bowl Game

WILKES-BARRE, PA (November 19, 2022) – The matchup between the King's College football team of the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) and Ursinus College from the Centennial Conference did not disappoint the near sell-out crowd in McCarthy Stadium on Saturday afternoon in the seventh annual Centennial-MAC Bowl Series. A late fourth-quarter surge by the visiting Bears secured the win for the opposition as the Monarchs fell, 24-13. King's finishes its exciting 2022 season 8-3 overall, while the Bears post a 9-2 overall record.

King's (8-3) defense came out strong to start the game, forcing a fumble on the second play of the contest as Brendan Mozeleski knocked the ball loose from Tony Holden and Jake Silver recovered the ball at the Ursinus 40-yard line to give King's great field position for their first drive. After 12 plays and 4:46 of the game clock, Shemar Ellis ran it in from a yard out on a fourth-and-one opportunity as King's took the early 7-0 lead with 9:20 to go in the opening quarter.

Ursinus (9-2) had a response on the next drive as they strung together their own 12-play, 73-yard drive to see a nine-yard touchdown reception to Kevin DePrince to knot the contest at seven a piece with 3:49 left in the first. Neither team could find momentum as the game saw five drives end in a punt before the Bears got back on the board with 11:41 left in the half thanks to a 36-yard pass to Octavious Carter. King's had one final strong drive to end the half, but they came up short as the Monarchs went into the halftime break trailing 14-7.

Despite any empty possession on their first drive, the Monarchs defense delivered again as Amir Gibson snagged a ball thrown into the end zone for an interception to set up the next King's drive. Eleven plays and 80 yards later, Tyler Moore ran the ball in himself for a nine-yard touchdown run as King's closed within one 14-13, with 6:03 to go in the third.

A defensive battle ensued on the next two possessions before Ursinus was able to convert for a field goal and a touchdown on their next two drives, and despite a valiant final drive by the Monarchs that saw them cover 49 yards in 1:40 of the game clock, their comeback efforts came up short as the Monarchs fell, 24-13, in the seventh annual Centennial-MAC Bowl game in McCarthy Stadium.

Tyler Moore finished with 189 yards on 22 completions, while Shemar Ellis ran for a team-high 92 yards on 14 carries with a touchdown. Michael DiGregorio led the Monarchs receivers with 73 yards on eight catches, while both Brandon Cohen and Joe Herman added 40 yards a piece. On special teams, Tyler Carey totaled 70 kickoff return yards, and Michael DiGreogrio posted 30 on two returns.

The Monarchs defensive efforts were led by Joseph Carchio with nine tackles, including a tackle for loss and a pass break up, while both Brendan Mozeleski and Dylan White added eight tackles each. Dallas Solomon posted a team-high 1.5 tackles for a loss of five yards, while Amir Gibson added to his interception with five tackles and three break ups.

Ursinus was led by quarterback Jack Psenicska with 233 yards on 18 completions with three touchdowns, while Tony Holden ran for a team-best 72 yards on 21 carries. Dallas Evans paced the Bears receivers with 97 yards on six catches.

The MVP of the Centennial-MAC Bowl game was awarded to Ursinus' Brett Gross for his dominant defensive effort, totaling a game-high 14 tackles with a forced fumble and a break up.

As a team, the Monarchs ran for 165 yards while holding the Bears to just 92 yards on the ground. King's also out gained Ursinus 354-325 in total yards of offense in the contest.
