Softball Falls on Final Day of Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (March 9, 2022) -- In their final day of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic, the King's College softball team fell, 13-5, to Kean University. The Monarchs conclude their spring training trip 4-2 overall and will begin to prepare for their schedule up north.

Kean (8-2) started the game hot, plating four runs on five hits in the top of the first. The Cougars tacked on two more in the top of the second thanks to two hits, taking an early 6-0 lead.

King's (4-2) got on the board in the bottom of the inning, scoring four on three hits. Junior Gabrielle Visconti got the offense stated with a lead off walk and advanced to second on a single from first year Harley Sullivan. First year Megan Mitola loaded the bases with a walk before junior Olivia Krupski drove in the first Monarchs run of the game with a one-out single to left. With two outs, senior Lindsey Leppo cleared the bases with a double to left field to close the deficit to just 6-4.

The Cougars tallied two more runs in the third and another two in the fifth to go up 10-4. Kean put this game away in the seventh as they saw three more runs cross on four hits.

The Monarchs made one last stitch effort in the bottom of the seventh. Leppo hit a lead off single to right center and was moved to second on a bunt from sophomore Celeste Portigiani. Then after Visconti worked a two out walk, Leppo scored on a wild pitch thanks to some heads up base running to post the 13-5 final at the North Myrtle Beach Central Park Complex.

Leppo had a stellar game as she went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, two doubles, and a run. Sullivan also posted a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a run. Visconti recorded the loss in the circle in the complete seven-inning game, giving up seven earned runs and striking out five.

Melody Caces led Kean with a perfect 4-for-4 effort, adding three runs scored. Heather Clevenger earned the win as she went the distance and gave up five earned runs.

The Monarchs are scheduled to host Middlebury College on Sunday morning in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 11:00 a.m. in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
