Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Atiyeh and Madise Score, Men's Soccer Wins on Senior Day 2-0 over Centenary

WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 10, 2022) --- The King's College men's soccer team honored their four seniors prior to the game, and the squad used the energy from the pregame festivities to dominate visiting Centenary University, beating the Cyclones 2-0 on Saturday at McCarthy Stadium.

With the win, the Monarchs improved to 2-3 on the season, while the loss dropped the Cyclones to 0-2-1.

Both sides started the game by feeling each other during the opening 10 minutes. After those opening minutes, King's (2-3) was able to fire off the first two shots of the contest before Centenary (0-2-1) responded by firing off two shots in the span of 22 seconds. Following the two shots by Centenary, King's rattled off the final eight shots of the half. However, neither side was able to break through, so the teams entered the half scoreless.

It was a dominating first half for the Monarchs outshooting the Cyclones 10-2 in the frame, while also garnering six corners to just one for Centenary.

The second half started much like the first as both sides were once again feeling each other, but King's was able to get an early shot off, before the Cyclones responded with two of their own. Over the next few minutes, the teams traded two shots a piece, before King's settled back in and began to take control. The Monarchs continued their barrage of shots and were finally able to break the deadlock in the 77th minute, when Evan Egnatovich corralled a block shot and played a low-driven through ball across the goalmouth, where Jordan Madise was waiting for the easy tap-in to give King's a 1-0 lead.

King's kept up the pressure looking for a second goal, and they got just that. After a foul along the sideline, Philip Permyashkin took the freekick and whipped the ball into the box, where he found the head of Aziz Atiyeh, who's initial header went straight up into the air, before following it up and heading it into an open cage, extending the lead to 2-0, in the 86th minute.

King's dominant day on the pitch finished with a decisive advantage in shots, shots on goal, and corners. The Monarchs outshot the Cyclones 23-7 overall, including a 6-2 mark on shots on goal. Additionally, the Monarchs finished the afternoon with 11 corners, as opposed to just one for the Cyclones.

Offensively, King's was led by Madise and Atiyeh who tallied the goals, while Egnatovich and Permyashkin both collected assists. Madise also led the squad in shots, taking three, while Atiyeh, Kyle Carroll and Nate Horn all tallied two shots. In goal Jake Forst made two saves en route to the win, while also gathering his first career clean sheet.

For the Cyclones, Kevin Lopez tallied three shots, while goalkeeper Andrew Tarkaszikis made four saves.

The Monarchs will look to make it two wins in a row, as the team takes the short trip up to La Plume, PA to take on Keyston College Wednesday night, with kickoff scheduled for 7 pm.
