Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Second-Half Goal Spoils Men's Soccer on Saturday

WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 14, 2023) -- After a well-played first half, the visiting Misericordia University found their successes, netting a second-half goal to defeat the King's College men's soccer team, 1-0, at McCarthy Stadium on a rainy Saturday afternoon. With the setback in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) match up, the Monarchs drop to 5-6-1 overall and 1-1-1 in conference play, while the Cougars improve to 3-7-2 and 1-1-1 in the MAC Freedom standings.

The MAC Freedom match up was a classic conference battle through the first 45 minutes of action. Each team had a few opportunities in the half with King's (5-6-1, 1-1-1 MAC Freedom) at a slight advantage in shots, 3-2, and corners, 3-1, in the span. The Monarchs best look at taking an early edge came with 2:07 to go in the half as Cameron Jones missed just right past the diving efforts of Saul Lagunas Jr. as the game remained scoreless, 0-0, at the break.

The Monarchs saw the first two opportunities in the second, but it would be Misericordia (3-7-2, 1-1-1 MAC Freedom) that would put the lone score of the game on the board in the 50th minute to go ahead, 1-0. Both Shane Serio and Liam Yair put strong attempts on the goal, but both were thwarted by the Cougars goalkeeper as Misericordia defeated King's by a 1-0 margin in the MAC Freedom contest at McCarthy Stadium.

Serio led the Monarchs with four shots in the game, including two on goal, while five different players tallied a shot in the loss. Jake Forst had another strong outing in the net for the Monarchs, making three saves in the complete-game effort.

Drew Weaver scored the game winner for the Cougars on a team-leading two shots, while Luke Ferrarese picked up an assist on the score. Mason Heyward matched Forst's three-save effort in the shutout win for Misericordia.

Despite the result, the Monarchs had the edge in shots (9-7) for the contest as well as corner kicks, earning nine to just five for the visitors.

King's will be back at McCarthy Stadium on Wednesday evening as they face a tough MAC Freedom contest with Stevens. Action is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
