Serio Scores Twice in Draw with DeSales

WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 28, 2023) -- Shane Serio scored two-second half goals, but a late surge from DeSales University tied the game as the King's College men's soccer team finished in a draw with the Bulldogs, 2-2, on Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) match up. The Monarchs finish their 2023 campaign with a 5-8-3 overall record and a 1-3-3 MAC Freedom mark, while the Bulldogs stand at 5-6-5 and 1-2-4 in the conference.

King's (5-8-3, 1-3-3 MAC Freedom) controlled the pace throughout the opening half, holding a 7-5 edge in the shot column and a 4-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities, but the DeSales (5-6-5, 1-2-4 MAC Freedom) defense remained steady as the game remained scoreless heading into the locker room.

It did not take long for Serio to put the Monarchs on the board, scoring his first attempt in the 51st minute off an assist from Buck Diacont then again 2:09 later to put King's ahead, 2-0. The hosts continued to try and build their lead, pestering the Bulldogs goal with seven shots over a span of 20 minutes. DeSales then began to stage their comeback, testing Monarch goalkeeper Eric Siciliano with three good attempts that were all thwarted by Siciliano.

The visiting Bulldogs made their late push in the 81st minute, scoring their first goal to put DeSales within reach of tying the contest. DeSales then netted the equalizer with 3:08 to go in the game as the MAC Freedom contest ended in a 2-2 draw at McCarthy Stadium on Saturday evening.

Serio tallied his two goals on three shots, all on frame, while Philip Permyashkin recorded a team-high seven shots with two on goal. Siciliano made six great saves in the net in the loss for King's.

Jake Hain and Liam MacDonald were the goal scorers for the Bulldogs, while Kevin Krall assisted on both. Goalkeeper Conner Zimmerman posted five stops in goal for DeSales.

It was a closely-contested MAC Freedom match up, with King's holding an 18-13 edge in shots with seven on target, as well as a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
