WILKES-BARRE, PA (February 10, 2023) --- The King's College women's ice hockey team picked up their first win of the season defeating visiting Hilbert College 7-0 on Friday night at the Revolution Ice Centre. With the win King's improves to 1-19-2 on the season, while Hilbert falls to 0-17-0.
Â
It was a fast start for King's (1-19-2) who tallied the first two shots of the contest in the opening minute, before Hilbert (0-17-0) got their first shot three minutes in. The Hawks got an early power play, but sophomore goaltender
Syd Dahl was sharp, keeping Hilbert at bay. The Monarchs broke through just past the midway point of the period, as sophomore
Jordan Dittmar finished off a passing play from first-year
Olivia McTavish to put King's up 1-0 at 11:57, a lead they took into the first intermission.
Â
The Monarchs remained on the front foot in the second period, scoring three times. Just over five minutes into the frame, junior
Emma Dos Santos poked home a pass from Dittmar to put King's up 2-0 at 5:11, before graduate student
Issy Lebrun extended the lead just 18 seconds later, scoring her first goal as a Monarch, finding the back of the net on the breakaway. McTavish got herself on the score sheet at 13:28, finishing off a nice passing play between Dos Santos and Lebrun to give the Monarchs a 4-0 lead heading into the third period.
Â
Once again it was all King's in the third period, as first-year
Brighton Walling scored at 1:36 off an assist from sophomore
Emma Clark to push the lead to 5-0. Just under a minute later sophomore
Becca Allen scored her first career goal at 2:33 off a nice pass from sophomore
Tessa Deemer to put the Monarchs up 6-0. King's added one more goal midway through the period as Wallin scored her second of the game of an assist from Dittmar.
Â
Fresh off her United Collegiate Hockey Conference Goaltender of the Week award, Dahl picked up her first career shutout, stopping all 22 shots faced. Offensively, the Monarchs had eight players record a point, led by Dittmar's three points, on a goal and two assists, while four others added two points, including Wallin with two goals. King's was strong in the face-off circle, winning 47 of 71 draws, led by Dos Santos, who won 12 of 19 and Dittmar, who won 11 of 19. The Monarchs were strong on special teams, going 2-6 on the power play and 6-6 on the penalty kill, while the seven goals scored by King's was the most in a single game in program history.
Â
Jewely Monford got the start in goal, making 43 saves on 50 shots, before being replaced by Cassie Troy who stopped both shots she faced. The Hawks were led by Jacqueline Alaburda who recorded nine shots in the contest. Hilbert was 4-6 on the penalty kill and 0-6 on the power play, while winning 24 of 71 face-offs.
