Women's Ice Hockey Comes Up Just Short to Wilkes 2-1 in Overtime

WILKES BARRE, PA (Jan. 30, 2024) - - In King's College women's ice hockey team's last game of the month, the Monarchs fell just short to Wilkes University 2-1 in overtime in this afternoon's United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) match up at the Colonels' home rink, Toyota Sportsplex at Coal Street Park. Amanda Sokol scored the Monarchs' lone goal of the game, while Syd Dahl had 32 saves in goal. King's is now 4-13-1 overall and 1-6-1 in UCHC play.

The Monarchs came out with an early start, gaining their lead just seven minutes into the first period. Both teams went shot-for-shot up until Sokol found the back of the net with assistance from Maddie Vaughan and Sammi Stead. Despite being up a player in power play later on in the period, King's was unable to score again, yet continued to hold off the Colonels to enter the second period with a 1-0 lead.

King's continued to play strong on defense in the second period to keep Wilkes off the scoreboard, especially in an intense first four minutes of play when the Colonels had nine shots before the Monarchs attempted their first. The Monarchs continued to work on both sides of the rink, but were unable to find the back of the net again, yet maintained their lead to go into the final 20 minutes of play with their 1-0 lead still.

The Monarchs held onto their lead until the Colonels scored their first goal of the afternoon at the 9:37 minute mark to tie the game 1-1. As both teams fought head-to-head to score the game winning goal, neither the Monarchs or Colonels were able to capitalize on offensive opportunities, and the game went into overtime.

Unfortunately the Monarchs were unable to continue their offensive moment from the final minute of the third period into overtime, as Wilkes took the only shots before scoring the game winner. Vaughan contributed a clutch block to keep King's in the game a bit longer, but the Colonels outlasted the Monarchs and scored their second goal less than a minute into play. Wilkes defeated King's with a final score of 2-1 after overtime.

This was a great showing for the Monarchs defense. Dahl ended the game with 32 saves for a .941 save-percentage, while Vaughan and Brighton Wallin each contributed two blocks in addition to one block from seven other Monarchs. King's also tallied 20 face off wins.

King's takes the ice again this weekend for a non-conference series against Albertus Mangus College. On Friday Feb. 2, the Monarchs will play the Falcons away at Ralph Walker Skating Rink in New Haven, CT, at 4 pm before returning back to Revolution Ice Centre on Saturday Feb. 3 for game two at 6 pm.
