Women's Ice Hockey Clinches Program's First Playoff Berth After Series with Chatham

PITTSTON, PA (February 10, 2024) -- Senior Ryan Bisgard slotted a late goal, but the comeback efforts fell short as the King's College women's ice hockey team fell to Chatham University, 3-1, on senior day on Saturday afternoon at the Revolution Ice Centre. The Monarchs drop to 5-17-1 overall and 4-13-1 in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC), while the Cougars improved to 10-8-3 with an 8-8-2 conference mark.

The King's women's ice hockey team also made program history yet again this season as they clinched the program's first ever UCHC playoff spot with the weekend's results in the books. Playoff opponent and location to be determined after the final games are completed next weekend.

Chatham (10-8-3, 8-8-2 UCHC) controlled much of the opening period before King's (5-17-1, 4-13-1 UCHC) made a push midway through the first with a flurry of attempts on net. The Cougars broke through and got on the board first, finding the back of the net on a power play opportunity 15:27 into the contest. The Monarchs had the edge in the shot column down the stretch though, firing off seven in the final 3:50 of the period as they faced a 1-0 deficit into the first intermission.

It did not take long into the second for Chatham to add to their lead, securing the eventual game-winning goal 1:15 into the period, but King's did not let up their defensive pressure and continued to get great looks on net. The Cougars had another answer late into the frame for their insurance goal, scoring another even-strength tally with one minute before the break as the Monarchs trailed, 3-0, heading into the final break.

King's turned up the intensity in the third, ultimately out shooting Chatham 11-10 in the period. After getting some great opportunities in the first half of the frame, the Monarchs found their window and capitalized as Bisgard chipped in a pass from Sam Kulman to get King's on the board and within two, 3-1, with 3:48 left. The Monarchs warded off some empty net looks from Chatham to maintain the deficit but could not carry the momentum to finish the comeback as they fell, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Revolution Ice Centre.

Bisgard collected her point off two shots and a block, while both Abby Barlocker and Emma Dos Santos led the offensive effort with four shots a piece. Maddie Vaughan went 11-for-19 in the face off circle, while Issy Lebrun tallied 10 of her own. Defensively, Barlocker led the team's eight-block effort with two, while Syd Dahl concluded the contest with 32 saves.

Both Allison Corser-James and Brooke Almond posted three shots on a goal and two assists in the win for the Cougars, while Ally Nolan fired off a team-high 10 shots. Additionally, Cameron Carmody, Nolan, and Liv McTavish all had six face off wins, and Samantha Barrett and Payton Lloyd combined for four of Chatham's six blocks. In goal, Sam Brophy picked up the win with 24 saves.

The Monarchs will wrap up their 2023-24 regular season with a series at Utica. Game one is set for Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m., while game two will be played on Saturday, February 17 at 2:00 p.m. in Utica, N.Y.
