COLMAR, PA (Feb. 7, 2024) - - Despite relentless effort on defense throughout the entirety of the game, King's College women's ice hockey lost to Arcadia University 4-1 this afternoon in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) matchup at the Knights' home rink, Hatfield Ice Arena.
Rae Hughes scored her first career goal to put the Monarchs' only point on the scoreboard. The Monarchs are now 4-16-1 overall, 3-12-1 in UCHC play, and 1-7-0 in MAC play.
In the first period, the Monarchs and Knights struggled to capitalize on offensive opportunities against strong defense on both sides of the puck. King's continued to hold off Arcadia until there were only 5:54 minutes left on the clock when the Knights scored their first goal. The Monarchs continued to push as they looked to put a goal of their own in, but ran out of time before the second period began. The Knights entered the second period with a 1-0 lead over King's.
The Monarchs came out aggressive on offense to start the second period as
Lucy Beal picked up an interception early on for a break away to the goalie, who made a big save and blocked Beal's shot. King's continued to push the tempo, but were unable to find the back of the net after being short players in power play and giving up two goals while down. Arcadia scored its second goal of the game in power play halfway through the period and its third with just three minutes left. King's remained scoreless as the Knights went into the final 20 minutes of play with a 3-0 lead.
Hungry to finally score, the Monarchs scored within the first four minutes of the third period when Hughes found the back of the net off of an assist from
Sammi Stead at the 3:16 minute mark. Arcadia scored its fourth and final goal 11:40 minutes in to end the game 4-1 over King's. This win made Arcadia MAC Regular Season Co-Champions with Alvernia University.
Despite the loss, the Monarchs played tough on defense as
Syd Dahl tallied 34 saves and the team blocked 15 shots.
Brighton Wallin led with three blocks, followed by sister
Aspen Wallin and
Emma Dos Santos who each had two.
Issy Lebrun also picked up 11 faceoff wins today.
