Fox's Walk Off Secures Sweep for Softball over Lancaster Bible

WILKES-BARRE, PA (March 27, 2025) -- First year Alyssa Fox hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh of game two to preserve the doubleheader sweep over Lancaster Bible College and extend the win streak to four for the King's College softball team on Thursday afternoon. With the wins at the Softball Field at Betzler, the Monarchs jump to 8-10 overall, while the Chargers drop to 10-8.

Game 1 – W, 8-4:
King's (8-10) staged a fourth-inning comeback to run away with the 8-4 win in game one of the non-conference doubleheader. After turning a double play to end the top of the first, the Monarchs struck first, scoring behind a pair of singles from Paige Bergan and Ellie Higdon to take the 1-0 lead after an inning of play.

Lancaster Bible (10-8) responded, plating two in the top of the second and another in the top of the third to lead, 3-1. It was the bottom of the fourth that King's found their spark, scoring seven runs on four hits. Higdon worked a one-out walk and advanced to second on a single by Colleen Shuler. Three straight walks issued to Jess Perella, Breanna Goldspiel, and Harley Sullivan brought in two before back-to-back singles from Fox and Bergan scored three more. The exclamation mark on the inning came on a bases-clearing double off the bat of Meghan Marianelli as the Monarchs advantage swelled to 8-3 at the end of the fourth.

It was a slow moving fifth and sixth before the Chargers attempted a comeback in the top of the seventh. The visitors tacked on a run in the final inning behind a one-out triple, but the King's defense stifled the effort to secure the 8-4 win in the first game of the non-conference doubleheader.

Bergan went 3-for-4 with a run to pace the offense, while Fox had a hit to go along with two RBIs and two runs. Marianelli drove in three on her double, and Higdon and Shuler put up the other hits for King's in the win. Courtney Grogan earned the win in 4.2 innings of relief, striking out four while allowing just three hits and one earned run.

Both Phoebe Clemens and Carleigh Cleland went 2-for-4 for the visitors, while Maddison Atkins picked up the loss as she allowed eight earned runs on seven hits with seven walks.

Game 2 – W, 6-5:
The night cap also showed some serious grit out of the Monarchs. Trailing 3-0 after a one-run first and two-run second, King's cut the deficit to two as they score in the bottom of the third thanks to a lead off triple from Bergan and a sacrifice fly from Perella to close within 3-1 through three frames.

The Chargers responded in the fourth, scoring their fourth and fifth runs of the game, but the Monarchs had an answer in the bottom of the fourth. Goldspiel singled up the middle to lead off the inning before moving to second on a one-out walk from Fox. Bergan hit a single to left center to load the bases before Cadee Munjone drove in two on a hit down the left field line. Perella then delivered the game-tying hit on a two-out double to left center to knot the score at 5-5 after four innings of action.

Each team put up two hits down the stretch, but it was King's to capitalize in the bottom of the seventh as Goldspiel and Sullivan both walked to put runners on with one out. Fox then doubled to the right center gap to bring in Goldspiel and secure the 6-5 win in game two to complete the sweep over the Chargers.

Bergan went 3-for-4 again with two runs and a triple, while Munjone went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and a run. Perella plated three with a hit, and Goldspiel scored twice with a hit. Madisyn vonFrisch earned the win in the final 4.0 innings, fanning six and holding the Chargers scoreless.

Both Ila Rowatti and Riley Danko had two hits for the Chargers in game two, and Danko picked up the loss in 6.1 innings, giving up 11 hits and walking six.
