Softball Toppled by #17 Moravian in Non-Conference Doubleheader

BETHLEHEM, PA (April 10, 2025) -- The King's College softball team was toppled by #17 Moravian University on a rainy Thursday afternoon in non-conference play. The Monarchs fell, 10-2, in five innings in game one before dropping game two, 8-0, in six innings on the road in Bethlehem. King's falls to 10-16 overall, while the Greyhounds improved to 20-4.

Game 1 – L, 2-10 (5 Innings):
Moravian (20-4) struck first in the bottom of the first behind a lead off triple, but King's (10-16) responded in the top of the second. Meghan Marianelli, Emily Novicki, and Ellie Higdon hit consecutive singles to load the bases, and Colleen Shuler was able to deliver the game-tying run as the score was knotted, 1-1, after the second.

The Monarchs took their first lead of the day in the top of the third as Alyssa Fox led off with a single to right and advance to second on a wild pitch. A hit to right field by Jess Perella and a ground out by Paige Bergan allowed Fox to cross safely as King's took a 2-1 lead after the top of the third.

The host Greyhounds exploded for six runs on as many hits in the bottom of the third before adding another pair of runs on two hits in the bottom of the fourth as the lead swelled to 10-2. The Moravian defense retired the side to hand King's the 10-2 loss in five innings in game one.

Six different Monarchs had hit in the setback, while Bergan and Shuler both had RBIs. Fox also picked up the loss in the circle, throwing 4.0 innings and allowing five earned runs with five strikeouts.

Marcie Silberman led the Greyhounds as she went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs, and a run scored. Sarah DeStefano secured the win in 5.0 innings, giving up two earned runs on six hits.

Game 2 – L, 0-8 (6 Innings):
The Greyhounds did not skip a beat in the second game of the non-conference doubleheader, scoring tow in the first. King's put two on in the top of the second but could not bring in the score.

After a quick third inning where neither team got much going offensively, Marianelli singled to short stop to put a runner on with one out before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by Higdon. The Moravian defense silenced the effort before their bats went on to plate another run in the bottom of the frame as the Greyhounds led, 3-0.

The bottom of the fifth saw the hosts capitalize on three hits for three more runs, boosting their advantage to 6-0. Kara Krouse hit a one-out single to right and advance to second on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth to try and spark the offense, but the efforts came up shy.

Moravian scored the final two runs needed to end the shortened game with King's falling, 8-0, in six innings on Thursday afternoon.

Krouse and Marianelli each had a hit in the game. Novicki took the loss as the starter, throwing 5.0 innings and giving up six earned runs on seven hits while striking out five.

Holly Walter led the Greyhounds with a 3-for-4 effort, including a pair of triples and a double, with three runs and an RBI. Kyra Holtje remained undefeated in the circle, picking up her sixth win while allowing two hits in the scoreless outing.
