Softball Surges Out to 17-0 Win in Game One of Split with Marywood

WILKES-BARRE, PA (April 2, 2025) -- It was a tale of two games on a rainy Wednesday afternoon as the King's College softball team dominated Marywood University, 17-0, in five innings in game one before falling, 16-4, in five innings in game two of the non-conference doubleheader. With the split, the Monarchs move to 10-12 overall, while the Pacers stand at 9-13.

Game 1 – W, 17-0 (5 Innings):
After a quick first inning, the Monarchs jumped on top of the Pacers in the bottom of the second, scoring four runs on four hits. Alyssa Fox led off the inning as she moved to second on an error by the Pacers before advancing to third on a single by Megan Matsko. Kara Krouse singled up the middle to drive in Fox before a double to left center off the bat of Breanna Goldspiel plated two more. A two-out hit to the shortstop from Jess Perella scored the final run of the inning as King's led, 4-0.

It was the bottom of the third when King's (10-12) did their damage, scoring 13 runs on 11 hits highlighted by back-to-back triples from Fox and Matsko as the Monarchs advantage swelled to 17-0.

Each team would put up a hit in their following at bats, but the respective defenses silenced any scoring efforts as the Monarchs cruised to the 17-0 win in five innings in game one against Marywood (9-13).

Matsko led the offense as she went 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs, while Perella, Krouse, Goldspiel, Ellie Higdon, and Colleen Shuler all had two hits a piece.  Emily Novicki picked up the win as the starter, throwing the first 3.0 scoreless innings and allowing two hits with four strikeouts. Courtney Grogan threw well in relief over the final 2.0 innings, limiting the Pacers to just two hits and no runs.

Four different Marywood batters recorded a hit in the loss. Brianna Voyer recorded the loss as the starter, allowing 11 runs on 11 hits.

Game 2 – L, 4-16 (5 Innings):
Game two painted a different picture as the Marywood offense jumped out to an 11-0 lead behind eight hits in the top of the first.

The Monarchs chipped away at the deficit, scoring four runs on a hit, a two-out single by Krouse, and capitalizing on five walks in the frame to close within 11-4.

Marywood scored another in the second and four more in the fourth to increase their lead to 16-4. King's was unable to prevent the shortened game in their final at bats as they dropped the 16-4 decision in the night cap of the non-conference doubleheader.

Krouse put up the lone hit for the Monarchs while four different players scored runs. Maura Furst earned the loss as the starter, giving up eight runs with just one earned.

Tori Para led Marywood as she went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs. Voyer rallied in game two to earn the win through 4.2 innings of work, holding the Monarchs scoreless.
