Men's Soccer Stuns Marywood With 89th Minute Penalty Kick For 1-0 Victory

WILKES-BARRE, PA. (October 24, 2026) -- The King's College men's soccer team delivered a dramatic late-game victory on Saturday afternoon, taking down Marywood University, 1-0, at Betzler Field behind a penalty kick goal from Cam Jones in the 89th minute. With the match scoreless and time winding down, Jones stepped to the spot and converted at 88:37 to send the Monarchs to a thrilling victory. King's improves to 6-7-4 overall with the win, while Marywood falls to 5-7-3.

The Monarchs controlled much of the offensive action in the opening half, generating several scoring opportunities. Joaquin Cedillo tested Marywood goalkeeper just four minutes into the contest, while Santiago Javadpour put a shot on target in the 22nd minute. Evan Corcoran and Cam Jones added attempts as King's continued to pressure the Pacers, but the teams entered halftime locked in a scoreless battle.

King's maintained its attacking momentum after the break, nearly breaking through in the 57th minute when Cedillo struck the crossbar. Mark Atherton and Anthony Ramirez added scoring chances, while Jonathan Cortez and Cedillo forced additional saves from Marywood's goalkeeper as the Monarchs continued searching for the breakthrough.

On the defensive end, goalkeeper Ben Van Valkenburg came up with three saves to keep Marywood off the scoreboard. Van Valkenburg denied a shot in the 44th and 52nd minutes before making another key stop in the 88th minute to preserve the deadlock ahead of King's decisive attack.

With less than two minutes remaining in regulation, the Monarchs earned a penalty kick, and Jones calmly converted at 88:37 to give King's the 1-0 lead. The defense held firm through the final moments to secure the shutout and send the Monarchs away with a hard-fought victory.

King's finished with a commanding 19-11 advantage in shots, including an 8-3 edge in shots on goal, while also earning six corner kicks to Marywood's zero. Van Valkenburg's three saves and Jones' late penalty kick proved decisive as the Monarchs secured their sixth win of the season.

The Monarchs return to Betzler Field on Tuesday, October 27, for their final regular-season MAC Freedom contest of 2026, hosting Delaware Valley University.
