WILKES-BARRE, PA. (October 31, 2026) -- The King's College men's soccer team closed out its 2026 regular season in winning fashion on Saturday night, earning a 1-0 victory over Alvernia University on Senior Night at Betzler Field. The Monarchs improve to 8-7-4 overall, while sending their four seniors out with a win in their final regular-season home contest.
King's honored four seniors prior to kickoff, recognizing
CJ Anderson,
Evan Corcoran,
Saul Lagunas Jr., and
Cam Jones for their contributions to the program. The Monarchs and Golden Wolves played to a scoreless opening half, with junior goalkeeper
Shane Hughes making two saves to keep the visitors off the scoreboard.
King's generated opportunities of its own, including a pair of late first-half attempts, but neither side was able to find the back of the net through the opening 45 minutes.
The Monarchs continued to battle through a scoreless second half before finally breaking through in the 80th minute. At 79:52, senior
CJ Anderson found the back of the net off a feed from
Mateo Chavez Paz, giving King's the decisive 1-0 advantage. The goal marked Anderson's third of the season, while Chavez Paz recorded his first career assist. The Monarchs' defense held firm over the final 10 minutes, with Hughes making three second-half saves to preserve the shutout and secure the Senior Night victory.
Hughes, making his first start of the 2026 season, finished with five saves to earn his third career shutout and first of the season. The Monarchs recorded six shots, including two on target, while limiting the contest to a one-goal margin despite facing 16 shots from the opposition.
With Saturday's victory, King's has now won three consecutive contests, with all three victories coming on goals scored in the 80th minute or later.
The Monarchs finish the regular season at 8-7-4 and now turn their attention to postseason play as they prepare for the MAC Freedom Semifinals against Arcadia University on Thursday, November 5, at 6 p.m. in Glenside, Pa.
