Strong First Half Slips Away as Lions Score Late to Edge Monarchs, 22-21

READING, PA (November 7, 2026) -- The King's College football team carried a seven-point lead into the final minutes of its final road game of the 2026 regular season, but Albright College found the end zone with eight seconds remaining to hand the Monarchs a heartbreaking 22-21 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) setback Saturday afternoon at Gene L. Shirk Stadium. King's falls to 3-5 overall and 3-5 in conference play, while the Lions improve to 4-5 overall and 3-5 in the MAC.

King's controlled much of the opening half despite the game remaining scoreless through the first quarter. The Monarchs pinned Albright at its own one-yard line with a 51-yard punt from Aaron Losada midway through the opening period and later sustained a 20-play drive that consumed more than nine minutes before a field-goal attempt sailed wide.

The breakthrough came at the 6:06 mark of the second quarter.

Facing second-and-eight from its own 34-yard line, Albright attempted a pass into double coverage, but James Mangine stepped in front of the throw and intercepted it at the 15-yard line. Behind a convoy of blockers from the Monarch defense, Mangine raced untouched the rest of the way for a pick-six, giving King's a 7-0 lead.

The Lions finally answered midway through the third quarter, capping a methodical 15-play, 70-yard drive with a three-yard rushing touchdown to even the score at 7-7.

King's responded immediately.

Starting at their own 34-yard line, the Monarchs marched 66 yards in seven plays. Pre-snap motion from Kival Clarke led to a breakdown in Albright's coverage, leaving the receiver wide open in the far right side of the end zone. Jaelin Mims dropped a perfect pass into Clarke's hands for a 16-yard touchdown with 2:45 remaining in the third quarter. The extra-point attempt was blocked, leaving King's in front 13-7.

Albright reclaimed the lead early in the fourth quarter with an eight-yard touchdown run, taking a 14-13 advantage with 13:07 remaining.

The Monarchs answered with their best offensive possession of the afternoon.

Mims opened the drive with a 16-yard completion to Brandon Auguste before finding Devin Duana for a 19-yard gain into Albright territory. After a sack created a third-and-nine situation at the Lions' 21-yard line, Mims calmly stood in the pocket and threaded a pass through traffic to Clarke, who slipped his coverage and hauled in a 21-yard touchdown reception - his second score of the day - with 7:06 left to play. Mims then powered across the goal line on a quarterback keeper for the two-point conversion, extending the King's lead to 21-14.

The Monarch defense delivered an important stop on the next possession, forcing a punt after holding the Lions without a first down.

King's regained possession with 5:36 remaining and attempted to drain the clock. Auguste picked up one first down on the drive, but the Monarchs were ultimately forced to punt and gave the ball back to Albright with 2:20 to play.

The Lions responded with a nine-play, 63-yard drive in the closing minutes. Albright crossed midfield with a pair of completions before reaching the seven-yard line in the final seconds. A quarterback keeper from seven yards out found the end zone with just eight seconds remaining, and the Lions converted the ensuing two-point attempt for the 22-21 final margin.

Mims completed 11-of-23 passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns while adding 15 rushing yards. Auguste led the ground game with 119 yards on 19 carries and added a 16-yard reception. Clarke accounted for both receiving touchdowns, finishing with three catches for 44 yards. Duana added three receptions for 43 yards.

Defensively, David Ennis led the Monarchs with 11 tackles and a quarterback hurry. Caleb May and Will Mecca each added six stops, while Mecca forced a fumble that was recovered by Sadiq Love in the second quarter. Connor Hughes, Love, and Jacob Mullery each recorded five tackles. Mangine's interception return for a touchdown marked the Monarchs' lone takeaway of the afternoon.

King's returns to McCarthy Stadium next Saturday for its regular-season finale against Misericordia University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. as the Monarchs celebrate Senior Day.
