SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, PA (March 24, 2026)— The King's College softball team dropped a pair of tightly contested matchups on the road against Penn State Schuylkill on Tuesday evening. The Monarchs fell in game one by a score of 9-8 and were edged in game two, 5-3. The losses move King's to 6-12 overall on the season.
Game 1 – L, 9-8
Penn State Schuylkill used a big second inning to take early control, plating five runs on a combination of hits and walks to jump out to a 5-0 lead.
King's responded in the third inning, cutting into the deficit with a three-run frame. Makenzie Johnson led off with a single before Breanna Goldspiel delivered an RBI double to left. Paige Bergan followed with an RBI single, and Molly Veach brought home another run with a bases-loaded walk to trim the deficit to 5-3.
The Monarchs continued to chip away in the fourth inning as Goldspiel recorded another RBI single to score Johnson and make it a one-run game at 5-4.
After Penn State Schuylkill added a run in the bottom of the fourth to extend the lead to 6-4, King's rallied again in the sixth. Johnson and E. Lanson reached base to set the table before Bergan delivered a two-run triple to right field, tying the game at 6-6.
The back-and-forth battle continued in the bottom half of the inning as Penn State Schuylkill regained the lead with three runs, including a two-run home run, to take a 9-6 advantage.
King's mounted one final push in the seventh inning. Kara Krouse came in to score on a double from Colleen Shuler, and Meghan Marianelli followed with an RBI single to bring the Monarchs within one. The rally fell just short, however, as Penn State Schuylkill held on for the 9-8 victory.
Johnson led the Monarchs with a 3-for-4 performance and three runs scored, while Goldspiel added two hits and two RBIs. Bergan finished 2-for-4 with a triple and a team-high three RBIs, and Shuler recorded a double and an RBI. King's totaled 10 hits in the contest.
Game 2 – L, 5-3
Penn State Schuylkill struck early in game two, scoring two runs in the first inning on a two-run home run before adding three more in the second to take a 5-0 lead.
King's struggled to generate offense early but broke through in the fifth inning with a three-run rally. Meghan Marianelli started the inning with a single, and Ellie Higdon was hit by a pitch to put two runners on. Madison Badali followed with an RBI double to get the Monarchs on the board, and Kara Krouse delivered a two-run double to center field to cut the deficit to 5-3.
Despite the momentum, King's was unable to push across additional runs over the final two innings as Penn State Schuylkill held on to complete the sweep.
Krouse led the Monarch offense with two hits and two RBIs, while Goldspiel added two hits and two stolen bases. Badali recorded a double and an RBI, and Marianelli added a hit and scored a run as King's finished with seven hits.
In the circle, Madisyn vonFrisch went the distance, allowing three earned runs on five hits while striking out three over six innings.
King's will look to bounce back in its next outing as the Monarchs host Lycoming for a double header on Thursday, March 26 at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m..
