John J. Dorish

On April 29, 2000 King's College officially held its dedication of the John J. Dorish Field House at a ceremony at Robert L. Betzler Fields. King's long-time director of athletics passed away suddenly September 20, 1999 after many years of dedicated service to King's.

Dorish was a major part of the King's College Athletic Department for 34 years and had served as athletic director since 1980 until his passing. During his career at King's, he served as head baseball coach for 25 years, piloting the Monarchs from 1967 to 1991. He also served as assistant basketball coach, athletic trainer, and was an assistant professor and chairman of the physical education department. Dorish also served on many committees for the NCAA and ECAC and also as a member of the Executive Council of the Middle Atlantic Conference.

In 1980, Dorish became director of athletics at King's when the College entered into the Middle Atlantic Conference era. During this period, the College saw vast growth in its intercollegiate athletic programs.

Since 1992, King's added varsity football, field hockey, women's soccer, and men's and women's lacrosse and divided cross country and swimming into individual sports for men and women. He was also a driving force in the construction of the Robert L. Betzler Athletic Complex, King's 33-acre outdoor athletic complex which has hosted several MAC championship events.

Dorish's tenure and contributions to King's will be remembered by many close to him and involved with King's athletics over the years. Still, many more in the future will benefit from the vision he provided in leading King's to its largest period of growth in the College's history.
