SIXTH-RANKED DELAWARE VALLEY DOWNS KING'S 43-3
WILKES-BARRE -- The sixth-ranked Delaware Valley College wrestling team won nine-of-10 matches, including the last eight bouts, to post a 43-3 victory over host King's College Tuesday in Scandlon Gymnasium.
With the win, the Aggies improved to 1-0 in dual meets while the Monarchs fell to 0-1.
In the first match at 125-pounds, Delaware Valley's Chris Sheetz used five first-period takedowns to build a 13-4 lead en route to a 21-5 second-period technical fall over King's back-up
Andrew Reichard.
At 133, King's returning Division III national champion David Morgan scored a first period takedown of Eric McCann to post a 2-1 lead heading into the second period. McCann would escape to tie the score at 2-2 and neither wrestler would score the rest of the period. In the third frame, Morgan quickly escaped for a 3-2 lead, and then added a takedown with 1:05 left to stretch the lead to 5-2. After Morgan turned McCann free to cut the lead to 5-3, the Monarch senior would hold the Aggie freshman at bay for the decision.
In the 141-pound bout Brandon Clemmer of Delaware Valley score an early takedown of
Tony Miele to take a 2-1 lead into the second period. Clemmer would choose the neutral position and neither wrestler would score heading into the final period. Clemmer would register three near fall points and added a riding time point for a 5-1 victory as the Aggies took an 8-3 lead in the team scoring.
At 149, the Aggies added to their lead when Jesse Harrington tallied four takedowns to build an 8-3 first-period advantage. Harrington would escape to start the second-period, but Davis countered with a takedown to close to within 9-5. But Harrington would again escape and added another takedown with two back points for a 14-5 lead before settling for a 19-7 major decision as the Aggie lead grew to 12-3.
In the 157-pound class, Ryan Herwig, ranked fifth nationally in Division III, continued the Aggie streak when he used two takedowns and three back points to build a 7-1 first period lead over King's back-up
Chris Poleto who was moved up from 149-pounds. Herwig would then turn Poleto to his back in the second period for a pin in 3:24 to push the team score to 18-3.
Mike DiGregorio would pick up a forfeit win for the Aggies at 165 to up the lead to 24-3.
At 174, Delaware Valley John Barrett would use a takedown and two back points for a 4-1 first period lead over Bob Baresse. Barrett would escape early in the second period, and then added a takedown for a 7-2 advantage heading into the third period. After Baresse escaped to cut the lead to 7-3, Barrett added another takedown to walk away with a 10-3 decision to extend the team score to 27-3.
In the 184-pound bout Aggie junior Mike Wilcox used two takedowns and three near fall points build a 7-2 first period lead over King's
Zach Martinez. Wilcox then added three more near fall points to take a 10-2 advantage into the third period before settling on a 16-3 major decision and a 31-3 team lead.
At 197, Joe West would pin
Eric Steltzer in 1:34 before Kyle Bilquist, ranked seventh nationally in Division III, pinned
Chris Rash at 1:28 of the final match at 285-pounds to set the final score at 43-3.
