KING'S WRESTLERS FALL TO 8TH RANKED COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College wrestling team dropped a 43-6 verdict to eighth-ranked College of New Jersey in a Metropolitan Conference dual meet Wednesday in Scandlon Gymnasium.
Match-by-match results are as follows:
125 - Kyle Kinchen (NJ) vs.
Lenny Viggiano (K)
Kinchen opened the match with a quick takedown followed by an escape from Viggiano. Kinchen added another takedown and three back points for a 7-1 lead. Viggiano posted an escape but Kinchen scored another takedown for a 9-2 first period lead. Kinchen would escape with 1:33 left in the second period and added a takedown for a 12-2 advantage. Kinchen then posted a pin in 4:31 to end the match.
133 - Ray Sarinelli (NJ) vs. David Morgan (K)
The feature match of the evening at 133-pounds has King's top-ranked defending national champion David Morgan facing TCNJ's seventh-ranked Ray Sarinelli. Morgan narrowly avoided two takedowns but Sarinelli fought off the attempts as the wrestlers were tied 0-0 after the first period. Sarinelli would quickly escape for a 1-0 lead but Morgan answered with a takedown for a 2-1 lead with 1:15 left in the period. Morgan would turn Sarinelli free with 0:40 left to tie the match at 2-2 heading into the third period. Morgan earned a quick escape for a 3-2 lead and fought off a Sarinelli takedown attempt at the edge of the mat. Neither wrestler would score again as Morgan earned a 3-2 decision. Morgan improved to 6-0 while Sarinelli slipped to 10-1 on the year. Morgan also owns a 3-0 advantage in matches wrestled between the two talented competitors.
141 - Brian Suozzo (NJ) vs.
Tony Miele (K)
After a few flurries, Miele broke open a scoreless bout with a takedown with 0:35 left in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. In the second period Suozzo countered several attempts to ride out Miele for the entire second period as the score remained the same heading into the last period. Suozzo would quickly reverse Miele to tie the match at 2-2. Miele would escape for a 3-2 lead with 1:15 left. Miele then posted a takedown with 0:23 left. A riding time point for Suozzo gave Miele a 5-3 decision to tie the team score at 6-6.
149 - Tyler Branham (NJ) vs.
Frankie Davis (K)
Fourth-ranked sophomore all-American Tyler Branham of TCNJ took a 2-0 lead on a takedown with 1:07 left in the first period. Branham added a quick second period escape, then followed with a takedown for a 5-0 lead. Branham would turn Davis to his back for three near fall points and a 8-0 lead heading into the third period. Branham countered a Davis takedown attempt with a score of his own to build a 10-0 advantage with 0:55 left. A riding time point would give Branham an 11-0 major decision as the Lions took a 10-6 lead in the team score.
157 - Dan Dicolo (NJ) vs. Dan Liss (K)
Dicolo scored a takedown with 1:17 left in the first period for a 2-0 lead heading into the second frame. Liss would core a reverse with 1:21 left to tie the score at 2-2. Dicolo would respond with a reversal of his own and pinned Liss at 4:39 to give the Lions a 16-6 lead.
The College of new Jersey would see its lead grow to 28-6 when Al Wonesh and Greg Osgoodby picked up back-to-back forfeits at 165 and 174.
184 - Jim Tomczuk (NJ) vs.
Zach Martinez (K)
Tomczuk scored a takedown at 1:08 but Martinez would escape with 0:48 left to cut the lead to 2-1 heading into the second period. Martinez would cradle Tomczuk to his back for three near fall points and a 4-2 lead with 1:10 on the clock. Tomczuk would cut the lead to 4-3 with an escape with 0:53 left. Tomczuk scored a takedown with 0:20 for a 5-4 lead heading into the third period. Martinez would escape with 0:09 left to tie the score but a riding time point for Tomczuk gave the Lion grappler a 6-5 win.
197 - Shawn VanWingerden (NJ) vs.
Eric Steltzer (K)
VanWingerden scored an early takedown and turned Steltzer loose to hold a 2-1 lead. He added another takedown and turned Steltzer free again for a 4-2 advantage heading into the second period. VanWingerden would escape to start the period then followed up with a takedown for a 7-2 lead. VanWingerden would cradle Steltzer to his back for a pin in 4:31 to give the Lions a 37-6 lead.
285 - Steve Carbone (NJ) vs.
Chris Rash (K)
The bout was scoreless when 10th-ranked Steve Carbone suffered a cut over his right eye just 1:02 into the match as the bout was temporarily halted to tend to the wound. When wrestling resumed neither wrestler would score as the match remained tied 0-0 heading into the second period. Carbone would escape just 0:10 into the second stanza to take a 1-0 lead and neither grappler would score for the remainder of the period. At the start of the third period, Carbone would quickly turn Rash to his back for a pin in 5:33 to give TCNJ a 43-6 victory.
